    what do you tell them?

I have been out beating the bushes for new business and everyone asks me what I am going to do with bad computer parts. I really don't know what to say as I don't want to give anyone any ideas about gold recovery so I just tell them I'm recycling them. How do ya'll handle those situations?

I suggest you be honest without giving away the farm. I tell people that everything is taken apart and sorted based on the material. They are then sold to a buyer once I have a large enough quantity to ship. The parts contain various metals that can be recovered and used to make new products. There is no need to mention Gold, Silver, or Platinum. You need to sell them on the fact that you are keeping their useless junk out of the landfill and helping the earth.

Anybody who knows computers knows there is gold in them. So unless you are asked about it don't offer the info.
What you are telling them now is fine and what I tell people. If they start asking more questions I tell them that everything is taken apart down to the screws and recycled. I also tells them that I have to ship different parts to different locations. When they hear that it usually ends the conversation since they realize that to get the $$$ it takes time and work and most people aren't interested in giving up their time and doing any extra work. Hard work is not for lazy people, and most people are lazy and want the quick buck.

About the same with me. If they mention gold i make some reference to EPA regulations and a vague hint at reviewing their life insurance policy. If that doesnt do the trick i pull out the old "you gotta ship it" thing. Like Brass said, people dont want headaches once they realize there isnt a big hunk of gold waiting to picked inside their dusty old tower.

One day a week will work eventually. Sooner or later, you will end up with one supplier that will get ahold of you every 6 months or so, tyhen you will end up with someone that gets ahold o you avery three months or so, then you will find end up with 3 or 4 people that will get ahold of you every 3 months or so. Keep at it and those regulars will eventually come.

As to the original question, I tell it like it is. I seperate and recycle their old equipment 100%. For me this includes dropping their old monitor at Goodwill for no charge as well and it will get recycled 100%. Keeping stuff from the landfill, is always a great statement to use. It gets to the core of it. If asked about precious metals, I will agree that there are, but not in the quantities that some would make you think. I then let them know that after buying their junk and spending the time and shipping that I basically get some beer money and a little extra for gas. Mainly, I am NOT going to get rich from their tower.

It is ALWAYS best to be upfront with people you are doing business with as well as in everything else. Even the smallest lie can come back to bite you in the butt. You can be very open about your business without giving away the secrets of how you actually end up getting money from the end product.

Well naturally I tell people that I take them home, recover the 10 lbs of gold that is in each tower. Then, when I have enough cash, I will retire to my own island - paid in cash.

Well maybe I don't say it exactly like that. Actually, no one has ever asked what I do with them.

I tell people that I break the down to the smallest level and have buyers for each part. I do this to help keep stuff out of landfills. I add last part becuase it makes some people feel good.

I tell them the truth as i usually pay small amount.I say there is plating its not that valuable unless you have large quantity.I am very honest with people and explain basic process .I had a customer tell me the chip on this board goes for 150 bucks on ebay .I told her thats new and hasn't been used if you really want to desolder it and find a buyer your more than welcome ,as i pull cash in hand usually quiets them down . Honesty can go both ways but i can sleep better at night knowing i did my part being the best person i can be .....

If they don't ask I don't say anything. If they ask, I say the same thing. I say I recycle them, to recover metals. I never mention gold or silver, unless they ask. I also talk about having to ship out of province, (which is true) and that you need large quantities to make it worthwhile. This is always enough to keep them from hoping to make a quick buck.

Can you please explain your comment about life insurance? I didn't understand what you meant by it. I get the whole EPA and shipping thing but not the life insurance comment.

I think by mentioning life insurance he's letting them know that there are some hazards and just trying to intimidate them a bit so they just want the quick cash option.

KZ and parrot are right. It has been generally agreed by most people on here that refining gold is not for amateurs. People that try it are risking their health and lives. If you feel qualified and have access to the right permits and tools, give it a try. Let us know how you do and you may discover a new business for yourself. good luck...be safe.

    I say 2 things.

    1. I collect CPU's ( Which is true )
    2. I make art project out of them. ( Which is not true ) - Unless you count the stacks of cash as art.
