Paydirt: First Fundraiser / Recycling Event Scheduled

I frst came on this forum because I really love scrap. I have always made a little (sometimes ALOT) of extra money scrapping. What I learned here has really helped to step up my game. I got into recycling e-waste and saw an opportunity.

I have worked through the chain of command at a local school distric and at 9:30am est. was given the approval for the fundraiser / event! We will be placing donation bins throughout all five shools within the distrct. A mass email will be sent by the school to all the parents. Each child will take home a packet instructing the parent to send in what their child can carry. We will pick up any larger items. The fundraiser will end with a community collection event on Saturday December 8th. At this event we will accept any metal or electronic items that the community wants to dispose of properly. We have teamed up with our local yard for 30 yard roll off containers. Unlike other events I have seen we will accept appliances including A/C etc. I have a certified refrigerant recovery guy and he will be handling all of that.

We are settig up in the school Thursday and will be removing a giant storage area full of computers! Going to the printer now to get the signage made up.

I will be posting everything that goes on in this thread so stay tuned. After we see how we do I will be glad to help anyone on the forum do the same. I will have telemarketing scripts, predesigned flyers, signage, letters, promotional items and everything you need. AT NO COST. Sharing information is what this is all about. Free exchange. God Bless Capitalism.

1 great idea, 0 dollars, and an opportunity!

    Great work.

Question about the fundraising. Who are you doing it for? A nonprofit or yourself? I love the idea. Someone else not long ago posted about doing a townwide escrap day. I wonder how it went. I would love to do something like this as well.

That's great Geiser...Be careful how you word your papers if possible. PA actually states in the EPA rules that only R2 complient people are to collect e-waste (covered devices) from the public. That was a big deal breaker for me and had me lose wind in my sail. Please don't lose any of your momentum or wind in your sail. Make sure you word the flyers that it is a donation of thier e-waste and you are not collecting it kinda wording. Good luck, and keep us posted.

We are working with a local R2 certified company. When I started doing this I began asking for advice from the local guys. I found 2 who are really cool. Some guys that are successful just want to see someone hungry get it. They have been very helpful. They are just interested in my material coming their way. The one guy even told me bring me your stuff and when you are ready I'll hook you up with my contacts.

I spent almost 6 months getting this running so we are well prepared. I am in the process of becoming R2 certified. I hired a consultant that got my buddy through the R2 process. He assures me even if takes a year or more he will get me through the process.

In the upcoming next few months we will be opening up a wharehouse / processing facility. There are alot of hoops to jump through but we expect to do very well. We will be the only e-scrap yard north of the city. Buy the time we open I will have every penny I have invested. Still we will be a building, scale, and some gaylords. God willing we will do alright. Operating capital is my next obstacle. I will figure it out. I figure about $10K on hand wil do it. I may just need to reall keep the inventory turning.

My deal is this. I am going all in with this if it doesn't work, I'll be out trash night. If the deals goes good we will do more fundraisers, open a yard, and look toward a million.

Ya' know, I have been really studying all the EPA laws/IDEM laws lately and the EPA has very little to say about e-waste..... at least compared to my state. They basically want all e-waste recycled and done so in America. They do have some regulations concerning shipping of e-waste but they are very easy to follow. Make sure you know your states environmental laws, they are probably a lot more strict.

    Good Luck on your fundraiser!!

We continue to move forward slowly asking questions and making informed descisions. With the people I have met locally and this forum success is just alot of hard work away. LOL. The information is out there it just takes alot of work to uncover.

    Thumbs up

    Geiser,
I am in your same shoes. I feel your passion in wanting to make it happen. I am getting some marketing material worked on (ie: website, flyers, business cards, etc). I then want to start looking into starting up a fundraiser in my son's school to hopefully start gathering material. We are located in South Florida.
Keep us posted on your successes and best of luck!!
