Scrapping Computer Question - (Cases what do you do with your's)

I was just wondering how many other e-waste people don't (or can't) handle the computer cases and other steel when done. I am just getting started and do not have the room or truck / trailer to haul the cases to the Metal recycling center.

How many others give away the cases and metal after stripping the computer down?

    Thanks

I haul mine in. You might want to talk to PTS or some of the other Denver members and see if you can work out a deal.

Not sure if this will help, but we use our forklift and a bunk (1000lbs) of 7/16 OSB board to crush the cases. It works really good and is suprising how many you can fit in a small place.

I use my saturn economy box car to scrap and I am able to fit at least 25 cases if not more into my car. Not the best thing to do but I do get more money and cheap on gas....

I have one guy who's situation is similar.......I buy the cases for a few cents less than what I get in scrap from him and just throw em in the truck when I go the yard........I make a few bucks and he doesn't have to take his car to the yard..........someone will buy the cases other than the yard I guarantee it.......In this biz you can't just give away money

I dont know wheather your are paying for computers or not but if you are your also paying for the cases. Either way your giving away money. 20 cases is approx $30 worth of steel maybe more maybe less depends on the size.

Really. I shove it in my car and go to the yard once or twice a month just to get rid of the steel and low grade boards. Puts a few bucks in my pocket and clears up space. Why give it away?

You could smash them or cut them up with a grinder. I personally would not give them away.

The last time I checked prices north of Denver it was $160 per ton. Figuring with the cases I have that comes out to $1.02 each = $20.40 les gas $5.35. That would only leave $15.05 for a 28 mile round trip and an hour driving time plus loading unloading and storage.
Plus their hours suck cause I can only go Saturday's their busy day so add two trips through the scale line. Last time that was around 15 min each wait.

Those numbers just don't work for me. Unless my math is off its just not worth my time. So far all the computers have been free. And I have given about 4 loads away.
I wish somebody would make a deal even at 1/2 the scrap price I would work only with them. Dreams but not yet.

So I kind of feel I was helping out somebody else and they were freeing up some of the little space I have to work.

Well before you give the next load away tell the guy you want .30 to .50 for each case. You would get a little money and he would still do ok.

Sounds like a good idea to me!!
I figure with the aluminum copper and PCB I am looking at 2 full loads now. My last one was about $450 that that was a bunch of motherboards.

Try making contacts with some of the other scrappers in your area, make them the offer of 2-3 empty cases for each complete computer they bring you.
I tracked down a local scrapper in my area a few months back and have been buying all of his computers since then, I picked up a load from him on Sunday, took all of my empty cases to the yard and got half of my money back.

Anybody know how many cases you can get in an 8' pickup bed? I'm getting ready to haul mine up to free up some room in the garage. I've got around 40 of them and trying to figure if I can get them all in one load. The trailer is loaded with stuff so can't use it.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

    Mick,
I just had 44 desktops 3 servers and several blades and switches in the 8ft bed of my chevy and still had room for more.
