I don't have an AMM account. Here's a link for the entire story.
Executive Recycling execs indicted; environmental crimes alleged - Denver Business Journal
"Instead, the indictment said, Richter and Olson made more than $1.8 million selling the ewaste to companies that shipped them abroad, presumably so the ewaste would be dismantled to recover tiny amounts of precious metals they contain."
So that Im not too confused, these folks were not in hot water for selling the ewaste overseas, but for falsifying records on what they were exporting? This article almost makes it sound like recycling ewaste for the PM's within.
Denver execs convicted in waste dumping - Denver Business Journal
This article is more relevant to the OP..
just goes to show how (for the most part) brainless and useless the EPA has become.
If china o any one else oks the import of crts or any thing else for that mater, what business is that of the U.S. EPA.
the obvious alternative is that all that crap ends up here. If the EPA wants to do something useful with their billions dollars budget, they could find an economical way to recycle crt tubes.
"anyone who thinks scrappin is easy money ain't doin it right!"
Employment Prevention Agency doing what they do best.
There are some of us who do actually care about the environmental impacts of electronic waste... I also think this conviction assists many of us in our fight to keep e-waste on our own shores. Which, in turn, creates more jobs for Americans as opposed to Chinese, Indian, Paki, Indonesian (etc.) children...
Fraud is fraud either way... They got caught. However, the FDA and EPA seem to make more decisions that harm the American job market than help it.. In this case, I agree with their actions entirely.
I am pretty sure this company was the one featured on 60 minutes 3 years ago. These guys were having electronic recycling drives and saying that everything was going to be recycled in the good ole USA. So 60 minutes did a little follow up when it spotted an export container at there place of business. They followed the container to the port of LA then to Shanghai china. It was a 20 yard container stacked to the brim with CRT units. They then followed the container to where they were being broke down and recycled. It was insane to see how they recycled them. OPENLY MELTING LEAD in a huge WOK while a guy was standing over inhaling the fumes. They had piles of rubble and other burned and discarded e-waste. The streams were black that surrounded the place. Eventually some chinamen came along and asked the 60 minutes crew to leave. I can't remember if they were armed or not but they weren't playing around. I have seen a lot of stuff in my life as far as pollution and recycling but this was 1000 times worse then anything I can ever remember seeing. These guys deserve more then the punishment they are getting.
They are in hot water for a lot of different things. Sad part is, it is their employees and clients who suffer the most.

the only point I was making was, the EPA should be funding the finding of a solution to the giant crt problem. what ever other crimes these guys commuted is a separate issue with me.
I am in Colorado and this is a question we get asked everyday and part of the reason we are Becoming R2 certified. It has caused a lot of concern in Colorado.
Yes these are the guys that was on 60 mins. The worst part about this in my opinion is they opened a new facility and are still in business as last I checked. If you do a little digging on Google you will find the company.
