Upgrading Laptop Ram

I have a Dell Latitude D510 that has 2 512mb ram sticks in it. I have to check, but I am sure I have a few 1gm ram sticks in my stash. My question is, would I be able to replace the 2 512mb ram sticks with 2 1gb ram sticks? I know most pc's and laptops can be upgraded to newer stuff, but I think I read somewhere before, that they all have a max that they can go to as well. So thought I would ask.

George, you can upgrade that laptop to 2 GB with no problem. The computer will not recognize more than 3(sometimes 4) unless you have a 64 bit operating system. The other thing to look at is the speed of the RAM.

Yeah this particular laptop can only hold 2 sticks. I believe i have some ddr2 that it takes, so I will look in the am and if so, see if it will work. Thanks.

Yeah, when I opened up the RAM area, it has a sticker or something that said to only use DDR2 ram.

i can confirm the 2gb ram working with the pentium m laptop. Mine is a 2.13ghz centrino and works flawlessly with 2gb ram running windows xp. It was a laptop i bought as scrap and got it working then upgraded the cpu and the ram to the maximum the laptop would take.

you should be able to upgrade that cpu also to the 2.13ghz version, should help alot

As weird as this may sound, I have never figured out where the CPU chip is on any laptop. Where are they located and are they easy to get to?

That is what I was thinking too. Why I don't really deal with them.

Laptops stink if you dont have a nice big workbench and a place to put every screw you take out in order so you know where to put them back. I have taken a few apart to upgrade and try to fix to get working for friends and what not. Not the most fun thing in the world to play with. Just had to replace a screen in my sons smart phone. That thing had at least 30 screws in it. If your not super computer savy I wuold just send them in to a buyer and use that money to buy a good one yourself. If you stick to just putting in ram or hard drives they are usualy just behind a panel so those are the simple upgrades. Anything else and your talking APITA.

When I start tinkering with something, usually the first web site I hit is ManualOwl. They have manuals for just about every computer out there and they are freely downloadable in a PDF file. They have manuals for cars, GPS devices, and other stuff as well.

just take a couple scrap ones apart and put them back together, all it is is remembering where every part goes and keeping track of the different types of screws. Just make sure you use good thermal compound like arctic silver.

That is very true on any computer that you are taking the CPU in and out. My daughters boyfriend had replaced the CPU in his "custom" computer and had used some heat sink compound that I had used from my radio repair shop days. Well the computer would run for awhile then suddenly freeze up. He ran a temperature scan of the CPU and it was running almost critical temperatures. After doing some reading up on it he replaced the compound with that silver compound and the computers temp. went down 20 to 30 degrees, into a safe area.
