I always run my questions through the search before posting, but sometimes don't find ann answer.. are the silver looking sheets behind the screen worth anything/salable? I'm probably 'shooting myself in the foot' breaking these down, ehh...

Been wondering the same thing, bump to the top.

err any of the glass or that thick plastic screen. Anything of any value in the screen itself?

lots of info here: http://www.scrapmetalforum.com/elect...alue-here.html
I've read many times "save the plastic!" "save the mylar sheets" "silver!" blah blah blah but I've never found anyone who will buy them. I did cash in a few of the circuit boards recently, in addition to the usual heat sinks and whatever copper I could scrounge from them. But personally I don't think they are very profitable for the amount of time it takes.
so really, I don't have any answers for you, just wanted to give the courtesy of a reply.

i recall one other buyer mentioning mylars, but this was the easier one to find.
Something to think of if you do a lot of these. Gallium is used in the making of the new LCD screens it sells for $500.00 a pound. If you have tons of the glass part you might be able to find a refinery that will buy them from you. allso the old LCD had CFL's in them but the new LCD's have LED back lights and the will be a nice board. if you get any I would be interested in testing the for gold content.
Just some worthless info to think about.

I think the mylar they are talking about is the mylar that is used to retain heat on exposure victims etc.
On the flatscreen boards theres a sort of plastic film that connects to the actual screen. Normally brown/yellowish & with a small black rectangle stuck to one side of it.
I read somewhere that this tiny part has more gold in it than most other parts.
Anyone know more about it? I never saved mine thinking its just rubbish.
The thick plastic sheet would make a nice clipboard. The rest may make nice scrapbook materials, ebay it & see I guess.
I'm beginning to think this flat screen plastic gold is kind of like that free land in Alaska, or the $5.6 million dollars for which Dr. Ijaz Ishaha Ashad of Lagos requires my urgent assistance.
Wait a minute!
Maybe I can ship my mylar screens to Dr. Ashad....
In flat screens there are 4 types of rare earth minerals. I don't know of anyone who is actually refining rare earth minerals, but I imagine someone is thinking about it, specially since China has admitted to how far their stocks of rare earth minerals has been depleted. I plan to refine them in the future, but I might be 5 years away from actually attempting it.
I am not sure where the rare earth minerals reside in flat screens, but I do know two people who own scrap yards, who are accumulating this type of material, hedging that in the future it will be worth their time to have them refined.
If you google rare earth minerals, you will quickly see the point I'm trying to make in this post. There is a ton of information, and news articles. Mines here in the US are just starting to gear up again to fill in the gaps China is leaving behind in it's wake. These mining companies are also a good investment, since the US has some of the largest deposits of rare earth minerals in the world, and the demand for them is only increasing. Literally, modern electronics, your touch screen phones to your plasma TVs, would not exist without them.
For those of you who have the room to store against the future, now would be a good time to purchase this type of material cheaply, you might have to sit on it for 5 years or more, but eventually it will have been well worth your while.

At the heart of science is an essential balance between two seemingly contradictory attitudes--an openness to new ideas, no matter how bizarre or counterintuitive they may be, and the most ruthless skeptical scrutiny of all ideas, old and new. This is how deep truths are winnowed from deep nonsense. -- Carl Sagan
