Eraser is what I have on my computers for files It has a bunch of options for over write. Part of the reason I like it is because you can leave the OS and just erase files and free space. it is on SOURCEFORGE.NET (open source) I also found a program call boot nuke I think and it would erase the drive from a disk also open source
