Needing some advice folks regarding audio equip..

    Howdy folks,

Don't usually ask these kind of things, but eh..what the hell. An no it's not a.."is it worth it to.."..lol. I know how much you all love those types of questions!

Anyhow, on to the issue. I've been building my network up down here on my sandbar, and my laptop guy called me a little bit ago, with a lead to a buddy of his who runs an home audio/tv company. Said dude has a bunch of non-working receivers, and a bunch of other stuff.

My question is..what would you pay for the receivers? We're talking 20-30 of them. I've only dealt with 2 or 3 in the past. There is a possibility they'd be free, but from what my guy said, dude would like something for them. I know on a past one I did I pulled a couple gold plated items, and a few other goodies out. Not to mention the decent weight for the shred as those suckers can be heavy. I don't want to low ball the guy, as this could turn into a regular contact for everything from receivers to other home audio equipment.

So my friends..I would like to hear your suggestions on what would be a decent price, I'm going to talk to the guy later today or tomorrow, and find out more info on the brands, etc. I would just like to have an idea on what would be a decent offer for something like this. I know what to pay for computers, tvs(if I did), and other electronics, but no clue on this stuff.

Thank you for your suggestions ahead of time, and I apologize for any errors in this post, as I'm working on hardly any sleep today.

You'll sleep good tonight! ; ) Non-working receivers? (that could cover a lot of ground)

Ahhh, I guess football season is winding down, isn't it

On that type of equipment, the price per pound that I pay is what I can get for steel.

Yea, thats what my contact told me. Said..'they don't work." Heh. Says dude gets them as he replaces them from customers homes. Like the appliance guys do. He was saving them to recycle and doesn't have the time to deal with it himself. Which is ok with me, except the payment part, cause I have no idea what to pay.

I'm guessing by "don't work" and "saving them to recycle" means there might not be any resale, lest not for anything more than parts.

Sirscrapalot - Not fan of having a monkey wrench thrown into his nice orderly pricing.

If the guy was going to recycle them then i would think he was going to load them up and turn in for shred. If he knows they dont work then i would have to think he wasnt going to put the time in to part them out. Offer him shred price and go from there. Your saving him time, labor and gas by picking up from his location.

Home audio bear. Like stero stuff, plug everything into.

I suppose I could have explained that better. I blame lack of sleep.

I'd give him shred price on an unseen load.

Most receivers that I've played with have a decent little load of various copper-bearing things in them, boards of various grades, and often some type of large heatsink (usually aluminum). If it's a nicer unit, it may be a midgrade board or better, and if it's got any type of video processing ability and USB and HDMI ports, you may see some gold in there.

In my opinion, they are definitely worth the trouble to strip, BUT a low-end unit will probably not be worth much more than a vcr/dvd player. If he's giving you nothing but high-end stuff, you may be able to bump up a few cents a pound from shred price.

Some of the really nicer ones that I've stripped have had the same type of innards you would see in a fairly high-end power supply.

I just took a really high end one apart today, and it had several low grade and a few mid grade boards in it. It also had a large Al heatsink and the largest transformer I've ever seen in any consumer electronic.

I have bought a few lots of receivers and other home electronics. My rule of thumb is $1.00 for things DVD player sized and units that are twice as tall I give $2. Seems to always work well. The tall ones tend to have the big heavy transformers and the big heat sinks. I don't have my numbers on me but I think they average out to be roughly $5 each (big ones) and $2.50 (small) with a simple breakdown. Super easy to do while watching tv.

Why not give him a slight premium for them like buying them at low grade rate 15 cents pound. That way he knows you are willing to go the extra mile. I tend to pay my local sellers extra, especially on the first trip so they always come back. I have about 5 regulars now that basically pay my bills.
I buy and sell all types of scrap and escrap. I buy specialty and hard to sell escrap. I buy resale items. PM me or contact me at jghilino@hotmail.com
I AM ACTIVELY BUYING ESCRAP OF ALL TYPES. BOARDS, RAM, CPUS AND MUCH MORE

Thanks guys, I think I'ma go with the offer by the pound, based off my scrap price, with a lil extra like JG suggested. I defiantly want to make this one pan out, as a constant source of such things would make me happy.

I'm going to get with the fella tomorrow and hammer things out and see what we can do. Will do a update after I talk with him.

Once again, thanks and as always the advice is appreciated.

Alright...UPDATE TIME So..Went to meet up with the owner of the home stereo audio company today. Taking Hobo's advice, I brought the cooler, fully stocked with various beverages, as I still wasn't sure the time we were getting together. Turned out to be an hour ago..lol. Won points by having some Sunkist up in the cooler, along with a new Beck's Sapphire. The 1 soda and beer bought me...

2 Home Audio Theater Receivers - 1 Panasonic and 1 something else I forget but a good name. Both heavy as hell, gold plated audio connectors on the outside, and fans no less.

15 High end Home Theater DVD Players - Sony, Panasonic, other big names. All with cords. Non-working he said. Figured I'd check see if there is a parts market for these things, if not..then scrapped they get.

7 TV's. CRT but only one doesn't work, I've already got 2 sold to a couple folks I knew looking for a couple for one of their rental homes down here. (1 for $15 and the other $10) And a call into another who I know was looking for a couple tv's for a rental house. So more then likely 2 more sold of the 7. I'll give another to a buddy for free as he just moved and has nothing. That just leaves 2 to either break down or try and sell on CL since we're getting closer to vacation season.

He wants me to give him a call next week, to come out and pick up some more receivers. Seems he has a guy who comes out an buys some from him every couple months and fixes them for resale. I'll be getting what this guy doesn't, along with all the other stuff he doesn't take. (DVD Players, other audio equip, tvs, etc). It's all free as of right now, but i plan to come back with a 12 pack of the beer, and some cash + lunch down the road to keep these guys happy. Decent warehouse full of stuff, and good folks.

All this was discussed and hashed out with the Owner. So hopefully no surprises and I just got me a long term customer, which is a good day in my book. We don't have many computer repair/tv/electronic places down here so when you can get a foot in the door with what we do have it's a good thing..lol.

Thanks for the help and knowledge folks..!

Sirscrapalot - Off to build a sand castle.

I would start looking at the type of receivers that are hot easy sales. Learn the models and what they look like and let the guy know your looking from ones from that time period. some of the ones the other guy is getting you might want to pay better on. Other wise more stuff is always a good thing.
