So, wouldn't it be nice to place a nice electronics recycling bin right next to the planet earth and salvation army bins that
some businesses have in their parking lots?
Anyone know where I could buy something like this? Any ideas how I could *make* something like this? Just a slot for laptops
and cell-phones, and I haven't figured out, yet, how to let them drop off their towers.
I think this is a great idea, I just don't know how to implement it! Any down sides that I haven't considered?

You mean besides the fact that you need to be a legitimate business with an R2 cert (most likely)to do this? And what are you going to do? Put 1 bin out? Can you afford to set 1000 bins out? A random Joe can't just set up bins like this.

get a 55 gal drum with a lid, make the lid hinged and so you can lock it and cut a slot in the side large enough for motherboards/laptops
another idea take a topload washing machine youve gutted, a couple minor mods and its a drop box

i actually scrapped a bunch of these bins that were on lease out from a company called parking lot solutions the bins were infested with bed bugs and had to be destroyed (thank god for hazmat suites and plasma cutters they would wrap service the bins and get lot leases for you for the low price of 6k a year $500 a month is it worth it i doubt it

500 a month? Wow! I can't imagine that would ever be worth it. I live in Maine, in a small-ish town - we have a wal-mart, but the movie
theater just closed! And so, I was just thinking about approaching some of the local businesses that already have a bin in their lot. And I
don't think I'd have to worry about being a non-profit, so long as I don't SAY that I'm non-profit.
But I don't think that I've given security enough thought - why wouldn't someone just break my little bins right open and help
themselves? Those jerks . . . . ;-)

If you watch the regular online auction sites gov deals ect they have a storage bin section or may be local your city or private sanitation company they are aiways selling there old containers,in my area they have bins just for cardboard they have steel lids and a slot for cardboard box's that are flatend they lock the container so only cardboard will fit in the slot any lap top will fit thru, make the slot a little bigger and the towers will fit,you will have to put some bleach in them to clean them out but they will not stink any more no more garbage being placed in them if they don't have containers with lids get a welder to put a lid and make a slot.a fresh coat of paint and there you go
Their is only 1 way to make sure no one steals from your container. You need to stand next to it 24/7/365.

I have put a lot of thought in this too. They do steal the clothes from the clothing bins, so someone will definitely steal computer parts. My problem is the security door that allows easy loading of a tower, etc. , but keeps crooks out. I am going to try 5 bins in my area, if I can get the money saved up to get the metal. If I get one together I will post pics.
It can't be small, they will steal the whole container.
