Has anyone noticed the gold plating on the INSIDE of the heat spreader on socket 775 and some socket 478 ?
I began removing them for the copper value, and to refine, for less weight of non PM's.

The heat sinks on those are copper. Not sure what they are coated with on the outside but probably Tin. Gold is used in electronics to protect connections from corrosion. There is no reason to protect a heat sink in this manner.

The only ones I have found with the gold in them has had the processor core soldered to the heat spreader (as seen in pics). I had the thought it was for the solder to stick to the heat spreader.
Other than that I don't know, but please open up a 775 P4 and see if anyone can make sense of it. Because it appears to be gold plating?

The most popular consensus on the clad is to be nickel. But again ,don't know for sure?
