Someone gave me a HP 1740A oscilloscope. I will be testing it and trying to sell it for more than scrap, but if no luck, the next step will be to scrap it. Do they have any high-grade boards or anything else inside worth taking them apart?

They have gone from $ 41 to $ 130 on the completed listing of e Bay, I think it will beat any scrap value.
I hope it helps.

Yep, I did a search for completed listings when I first got the unit. One dilemma with old bulky equipment is that it's heavy so expensive to ship and so you need to ensure the unit is fully functional (and be lucky too) to get enough to justify selling it rather than scrapping. Like I once sold a vintage monitor but after shipping and fees I only netted about $10. Not much for the time I spent selling it.
You might try listing on C.L. in the bigger city around you, that way you have a local pickup.
You can also specify Ebay for a local pickup if you go that way.

Most of the buyers ive used in the past classify those boards as low grade or low midgrade at 50 cents which is basically the same thing.
I buy and sell all types of scrap and escrap. I buy specialty and hard to sell escrap. I buy resale items. PM me or contact me at jghilino@hotmail.com
I AM ACTIVELY BUYING ESCRAP OF ALL TYPES. BOARDS, RAM, CPUS AND MUCH MORE
I had one that I put on eBay and sold it for about $75 along with $75 for shipping. It was a big old Tektronix and I had no idea if it worked or not. The guy that bought it said he buys the old ones for spare parts, etc. Seems to me its worth a shot to list it and put enough value on it to cover your costs. Who knows?
