Do the terminals need to be taped with electrical tape, or any old tape (scotch, masking, etc) to prevent accidental contact? Is this is to prevent sparking hazards, or is it generally required by buyers? Is this necessary with the small disc batteries commonly found on motherboards also? What about NiCad batteries?
Thanks for shining any light on my ignorance here.

I can't give you any technical details but yes, the contacts touching is the reason behind this. You might need to google specs for how and with what. Also check the similar threads links at bottom this page.
If I remember correctly it was a cause of a plane crash in Florida several years ago

I once had the same question. I asked my buyer. He said electrical or duct tape. Your buyer may want it done differently.

I've seen this discussed in another thread but I don't recall how long ago. Before it was over we were moving our computer battery buckets away from anything flamable ; )

Use electrical tape. Two rolls from the dollar store..$1!
All the buyers I've talked with about batteries have asked for them to be taped at the contacts an to use electrical.
Your mileage may vary.

I didn't ask about those Bear, sorry. I was more concerned about the contacts hitting an such. Don't see all that on the MB batteries, those little button ones. What got me asking was the thread where it was discussed about causing planes to crash, an fires, etc. I don't need all that stress..lol.
I want to say it was Rok or Noble who had the thread on the dangers of not taping the contact points.

It is the li-ion batt that catch fire like that. Just use a reasonably heavy tape that will take the shipping to the final recycler.

One morning when I was still in bed I heard a small 'Bang' & wondered what it was. After a while I remembered hearing the sound before too, maybe a couple of times
A year later I open a plastic box to get a few batterys for something & find a few with no insides & a couple of metal discs.
Weird.
Then, a year or more later I relise that they had come in contact with each other, shorted out, heated up & exploded.

Yes batteries are brass or brass plated..not gold.

I find electrical tape to be the easiest because of how you can rip it. I have found that a lot of the cheaper duct tape doesnt stick to anything anymore.
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

I've been using painters tape cause I hade a roll nearby. Just keep the terminals covered with a tape that won't
come off easily.
