Chip in a GPS

So as some you know lately I've busted open two gps units, one from the inside of a router/modem an the other from a broken gps unit for the car.

So my question is...has anyone opened one before? I'm curious what this "cpu" (for lack of a better term) is made of, an if it's something I should keep to the side for it's own special bucket or if it's just..bleh!

I'm gonna go grab a pic or two of it, an will update my post once I have it.

Gotta get the wife to work, then will update!

Is that chip socketed in or soldered on?

It pops out BC, not really soldered. Has the sticky glue stuff on the backside an fits snug into the board.

Took some pics of it..so ya'll can see the backside of it.

Side where the chip 'plugs' in. Look close an you can see the hole. It just pops in an was glued down, going by the thermal paste/glue stuff on the back. No solder that I can tell.

Wipe off the paste And see if there are any markings or names on it. Looks almost like a small DEC processor. Hard to tell from the pic if that is gold cap or silver?

Silver on backside. No markings. Only markings I can see are what's on the front. I got a big fail when I tried to Google the numbers.

For those curious or can't make it out in the pic...the stuff on the front is the following... P90 Partron ANPS1580C3ZFA.

Only thing I find with Google is Partron is who made it, if I add in the P90 I get gun sites..lol..I add in the whole thing an I get the Google fail search result.

that is an internal antenna for the GPS not the CPU.

Thanks E. I had put cpu in "'s cause I had no idea what to call it.

Hence the asking for ya'lls wisdom.

So..that mean it's worthless or what? Silly things. That'll teach me check images when I do a google search on things like this. Gah.

Guess it's going the in the "Beats the hell out of me what it's worth™"bucket..lol.

They have some silver on them. Its the grey ink. Be carfull if they are white or pink as the could be BeO ceramic.

P90 sounds like an old Pentium chip

Check the GPS chips close, if it has NSA in the numbers some guy in Russia was buying those at better'n scrap

If you go to their product catalog (Its a 30+ MB download for 16 lousy pages) and go to antennas, you can find the GPS antennas with most of your part number shown. But you already knew that from smart guy who is crafty enough to use Google images!!

What I'm scratching my head over is why they might have beryllium oxide in them. They don't see any high temperatures which is what BeO is good for. But I'm glad for you that it might have a little silver in it.

I'm amazed at what devices contain GPS devices nowadays. A little while ago, my Mom-in-law passed away and my brother-in-law took her satellite TV receiver to his place to use up the last of the contract. The service provider shut down the receiver within a day. We were all wondering how they found out so fast...I finally figured out, from this forum, that GPS devices are everywhere!! Including in Grandma's satellite receiver!

So why the h*ck do I have to pay an arm and a leg to get a GPS-equipped dog collar?

Your right about the lack of a need for BeO in the ceramic. I just always throw that out there when I see white or pink ceramic in electronics parts.

All GPS units are receivers, so there will be a big honkin antennae like you discovered. El Cheapo Tom Tom isn't going to be anything but a receiver, maybe a sd card, and a small copper board. Take closer look at the ones that have at least 3 jacks to them. Looking at some pretty nice boards in them, of course my boss won't let me take the $6000 unit apart to see what's in it. But I did take an old one (2002) apart and it had more gold pins than the last 3 digital cameras I have dismantled.

Yea..this one was out of a modem/router. Busted open a couple a buddy had for me, an there was decent boards, but they weren't the cheapie kind. I'm going to be getting a few more( like a big tote's worth) once I do, I'll bust'm down an post my results. It'll be a bit, I'm back logged! lol.

Other ewaste comes first tho.
