I'm tearing apart some memory sticks (not going to say "RAM") and have some with silver/tin. These chips are bigger than the gold chips. Can these all go together or do I need to keep them separate?

It would come down to the reason you are collecting them. Hoarding, ebay, refining, selling elsewhere..?

Mick if your selling you may get more for the big chunky ones from older sticks. There is a guy on grf who refines them and has a large post on refining those. Its really long over 10 pages but worth the read. Pretty sure there is a breakdown of different types somewhere in it. Guys name is Patnor101 I believe. He came up with the process for those chips. He may or may not buy them too.

If you are selling, then most likely keep them separate. You can provide the amount of vintage chips vs new ones. I do know that the newer smaller ones are more valuable than most chips pulled off of boards, because of the mass of them compared to the number of gold bonding wires is smaller. More legs = more gold in general. So lots of legs and a smaller chip makes them worth more per pound. Comparatively, the ic chips from boards with legs on 4 sides are worth more than 2 sided ones.

GRF= Gold Refining Forum. Its a technical bunch of guys who talk about the process(es) of chemically recovering precious metals. It can be a touchy subject as the chemicals and the gases they give off can be very nasty and deadly.
Therefore, the guys on the forum don't tolerate ignoramuses and aren't much for dumb questions and humor either.

Please, any of you who are members/fans of GRF, no offense intended. I've never been to that forum or even heard of it until today. I was just commenting on sawmilleng's description, from which I got the impression that the place might be a little inhospitable. A group that discourages "dumb questions and humor" sounds a little scary to me. Then again, I've worked as an instructor and had to try to get students to overcome their fear of asking a "dumb question," so maybe I'm just extra sensitive about that kind of thing. And humor seriously is one of mankind's greatest blessings.
Anyway, just let me know when I can remove my foot from my mouth...

They are a good bunch, very insightful an helpful..if you do a bit of studying before asking questions. The info you need is all over that site, an lots of it for free. Like CM Hoke..no reason not to read the pdf. They got a good reason to be that way tho, far as I see it. It keeps the people out who think it's a game. In scrapping..we risk some injury, tools, break downs, etc. Those guys not only risk injury but death if they screw up the wrong way. Or kill a household, or neighborhood. Them chemicals are nasty business, lest in my ever so humble opinion. Now I know some of you do crazy scrapping, an risk death, but the average scrapper out there..isn't going to die breaking down a hard drive, or a vcr.
I still say they have a secret room over there where they all go silly, but I've yet to find it. I'll have to bribe BC. Maybe he knows.

Yes some of the guys on GRF a little anal but with good reason. The process can kill you, your family and the neighbors. They want to be assured you know a little about what your doing. Just like any thing else common sense is required.

It depends on who your going to sell to. selling to an e buyer it really makes no difference but to a "hobby" refiner you may get a little more keeping them separate. "Hobby" refiners like to know the yield from each separate item and batch.
Of all the professors I studied under while going through school, the chemists were the most demanding, and completely no nonsense in the lab.
