So just out of curiosity what is the most gold you have made from stripping it out of electronics? More specifically in one batch...I'm contemplating starting the process of removing and refining gold plated items as I have not had much luck finding buyers for plated items... I've watched some videos on stripping and refining and it seems relatively easy just little yield for time spent so it would be more of a hobby.... I'm completely new to e waste

Refining can be very bad for your health if done wrong.
Go to this forum and read. Also find Hokes [spelling?] book on line and read some more.

You've "not had much luck finding buyers for plated items"? You must have made quite an effort to avoid them. There are buyers on this site. You can sell them on any auction site. You can sell them as is or trimmed. There are probably ten people resisting the urge to type "sell them to me". Whatever you do, go to the Gold Refining Forum and READ before attempting any refining.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Thanks mick and immulmen. .. anywhere I used to sell gold items wouldn't take plated items (mostly jewelry)... I've read several articles on refining and watched a couple videos and it seems relatively easy as I have access to a lab and all the necessary equipment and ppe... my main question here was what kinds of yield people were getting in their typical batch... I know people on this site hate beginners but I'm curious and google isn't going to give me first hand experience so I had to ask

I'm pretty sure you want the gold refining forum and not this one. People here are great for answering questions, but steer clear of refining for several reasons.

We do not hate beginners on this site, lets get that straight first. Next I refine some of my own material and have studied for well over a year before I even attempted to do any test refining on anything. Listen to what others have said above...go to grf, sign up, and start to study. Ownload a copy of Hokes book over there and read it. Than read it again. And then read it again until it starts to make sense to you.

Much like "reality" tv, utube makes a lot of things look easy. Half or better of those vids are BS.
The leave out very very important points, such as, in refining gold, one mistake can lose your whole batch. One mistake or simple things like a small shift in wind direction, can kill you,your family, your pets, and your neighbors.
Go to grf and ask the same question you just asked here.. Not trying to be harsh, just letting you know it ain't easy, and it's a big risk in many ways.
Let's suppose you are successful at reclaiming your gold, you then have to have it refined, COST, and what are you going to do with a couple of grams of gold, unlike the utubers claim, your local jeweler isn't going to buy it. In order to sell raw gold you need ounces not grams and there are going to be expensive assay charges. To be salable you need certified .999 fine gold clearly marked by a certified refinery. just my .02

i originally started out with the state of mind that i would get me some easy gold and silver...i wss going to do it my self just like i saw on you tube...then i found this site.....then i was nudged towards the gold refining forum......then after weeks of nightly reading i decided, hey man i can sell my scrap as is for pretty **** good money...
dont get me wrong i do save a few things off to the side and one day i plan to refine them my self..i still spend a few hours a week researching on the gold refining forum ..i figure that way when i get the nerve up to try it i will be as educated as i possibly can....
i dont think anyone here hates new comers...i just think that they have read about refining and they are afraid to encourage someone to do something that may harm themselves or there families...i do not like how you tube makes things seem quick and easy ..when in fact they are very dangerous...as mentioned before ,most of the time they leave out a lot of the prep work and other key things that are very important to doing things safeley and succesfully
there are buyers in the buy and sell section that buy plated and filled jewelry by the weight....also it sells well on ebay

Plus the fact is when starting out refining you will unknowingly throw out half of the gold your trying to refine (per GRF) simply cause you don't have all the processes fine tuned. One of the best suggestions I have seen here is this............Break down computer.........Sell E-waste...............Get money..............Buy real gold or silver from dealer.............Personally I just collect $100 dollar bills but buying gold and silver is probably a good investment over time

I guess it's like a lot of things: you can specialize in refining if that's your passion. But I don't think we should all try to specialize in everything.
