turn over a bunch of hard drives, and open a bunch of Frisbee drives. it will explain itself. that is how easy it is.The HD board is at least 2" narrower and quite a bit shorter.

i just opened that same exact board but i have some older ones that are bigger...are the amount of gold pins the same in both kinds of boards?

There will be 40 pins on each board (Assuming they're IDE- Most will be).
The hard drive boards have more chips, though. A hard drive will need more controller functions than a CD Drive will.
The chips are the difference. Of course, you'll want the largest hard drive boards possible.

Hard drive boards are the width of a hard drive and cd/dvd boards are the width of a cd/dvd drive.

Well, there's that too...
In case the above observations doesn't get the job done and we are talking about IDE. The pins are arranged differently. Hard drives have the smaller segment of gold pins between the larger segment and the silver colored pins. CD/DVD have the silver pins on one side of the large segment and the small segment of gold pins on the opposite side.

this is a little bit off the topic but does anyone know what type of screw (the head) is in the hard drives? also, where to get them?

Yeah....that style screw head is called a ford screw. The best tool to use is a toxic bit in a drill or screw driver. I think it's a size T6 or T8

The screw heads for the motor are usually under the platters. Not always, though.
There are about 20 million different ways the platters can be attached, though.

you definately need some torx bits if you're gonna do any work with computers...sometimes they hide the screw heads under a sticker

And the floppy drive boards are just a row of Gold plated pins on a small board with one chip on it.
The smaller harddrive boards are this same width too . But with more chips.
I found a nice cheap screwdriver set, yellow and black handles, for NZ$10. With the Torx bits, there's one size torx bit missing but I have only found that size screw once.
For that, I reground a broken drill bit 'backwards' (as a left hand drillbit would be) and unscrewed the screw by 'drilling it out' with that drillbit. It drilled a bit, then caught, then unscrewed the screw once the screw came loose.
You will probably find the same set at harbourfreight. They are mounted in a 'fan like' array on a cheap plastic backing.
Pozidrive bits, flat bits, torxbits
With experience you will find it easy to tell the difference. I find the color of the the HDD boards and CD/DVD boards have a marked difference along with the feel and overall appearance. So after a few hundred of each you sould be able to pick them out easily, I know I can. Mike.

they almost always hide them under the stickers. nowhere near sometimes for me... it's 99 out of 100. it's a warranty thing.

I'll admit as many as I have scrapped I sometimes have a hard time telling them apart. Now what I do is after the hard drive/cd rom board is removed from the hard drive/cd rom I put them in the appropriate hard drive/cd rom bucket.
