    In case the above observations doesn't get the job done and we are talking about IDE. The pins are arranged differently. Hard drives have the smaller segment of gold pins between the larger segment and the silver colored pins. CD/DVD have the silver pins on one side of the large segment and the small segment of gold pins on the opposite side.
