Just because people trash them all the time doesn't mean it's the right or legal way. There are probably more threads here on the hazards and proper disposal of CRT's than anything else. If you took just a few hours and read some of these threads you would know that you should never smash a CRT. You would also learn the proper and legal way to recycle them. The statements you made above just means people in your area are doing it the wrong way.
