That is scary! I hope none of our stuff ends up there. It defeats the purpose of why I do this.

We purchase laptop computers and many components for greater than scrap value. We offer a shipping reimbursement program.replies

I agree that it's sad, but I do disagree with the tone of the article.

Most of us aren't that way. I certainly know that I'm not. And, it is certainly reasonable to expect to profit from E-Waste. Sometimes you do better than others, but unlike the article, I fail to see that it's "impossible" for an American-based E-Waste company to make money.

I read the whole article and found it very interesting. It reminded me of the coal miners and others that in the past had very hazardous working conditions for the little pay they received. You end up with workers and their families not living as long and healthy as would be ideal.

MONEY does make the world go round. That is why I learned years back that if I didn't chase the carrots, that the carrots would get around to coming to me, many times for free.

But as this season of mankind goes about their endeavors and quests it can sometimes sure make a ME$$.

Thanks Hobo for the link as I did find the story most interesting.

p.s. Not to yank your chain or such. But when I wrote Hobo I had a thought of what would happen if in typo someone typed Hoho. It made me giggle thinking of it as I thought of those Hostess chocolate cakes. Just sharing the giggles I get at times when something strikes me funny.

I sort of figured that from your flashy avatar that you like tasty cakes. Did you ever see the mascot that Hostess Ho Ho's had? It's a Ho Ho cartoon character done up like Robin hood, That is what my minds eye saw for a moment. I remember many images and advertising jingles from my younger daze. The Lays Fritos Frito Bandito. And Capt. Crunch the sea captain. Then there was Yah Hoo Mountain Dew with the mountain man cartoon man.

and put a tiger in your tank.

I enjoy Living in the past and the present at the same time as the future seems a bit on the busy side for my personal comforts.

I sort of view the future as the rising of the new day sun. It comes and it goes and comes again.

Must be why the concept of time travel interests me a little. I am a bit of a time traveler as I Live in the past, present and future all at the same time.

Did you know that Albert Einstein said that Time was a only a illusion, but a very convincing one?

When we feel we are short on time, just WHAT is it that we are missing if time is but a convincing illusion?

    Stupid quote from the article:

"Environmental activists have objected: “This isn’t recycling; it’s scavenging.”"

Well, duh. Recycling stretches a bit beyond pretty colored bins in the garage. I'm quite sure that I fall in someone's "scavenger" category.

An entertaining read. As in most "investigative" reporting this article does a poor/misleading/provocative job of not telling the whole truth(certainly as this subject relates to our members).

I found the following quote demonstrates what I am referring to.

"China will recover about $1.50 to $2 worth of valuable commodities from an average computer. With such low yields e-waste recyclers in the United States can’t cover their costs, much less turn a profit."

I found that this article has many problems with it, including a re-use of another report by another reporter. I am very much a skeptic when it comes to reporters in general and this article re-enforces my skepticism. It seems to me this article does nothing to inform the reader about the positive that has taken place in the US recycling business.

I do thank you for sharing this with us. Mike

the only crying I am doing is seeing the pics and wishing that was my back yard/town. i would just flip the bill and insource these workers to the u.s., supply them with decent and safer working conditions and dorm style living. paying them still only 75cents an hour but getting in return what they want the most, a clean safe place to live with an abundance of clean water and showers omg hot water showers. plenty of good food like greens and other veggies and fruits which like most Americans they will waste and go for the high in corn syrup salt fatty foods we strive to produce and stuff down our gullets but non the less supply them with plenty of each all with in a 12-18 month contract for work.
meanwhile building the largest recycling facility in the world with the most blowback right in the land of dreams probably in the desert so i get free solar power lol and taking crts for free and truly being a closed loop facility lol hound me all you want for this but it works its safe and it takes away money from china and worse thugs and the illegals and American workers desperate for a job in this country will not be tapped so those companies are not threatened either
