I put this in the electronics section because it is probably the closest category for it. My doctor has me wearing a heart monitor for 30 days, and every day I have to change the electrodes that are stuck to my chest. On the package I noticed in the corner it says Ag/AgCl. I looked it up and apparently the gel used on these does have Silver in it.
Does anyone have any knowledge of how much they contain? Can the gel be refined?

I'm wearing one right now but I did notice the connectors are nickel according to the paperwork.

The amount of Ag used in medical gels and foam wound dressing is so small you could have a patch aday for 30 years and still have nothing of valve.
The silver is there to act as an AntiMicrobial only.
I wondered the same thing when I was treating my mothers surgical wounds with Mepilex Ag foam dressings.

The actual connections are nickel, but the gel underneath is Silver Chloride.

I read more about this, and I was incorrect. It is not the gel that contains Silver, it is the pad underneath the electrode. The Silver content on these is not for antimicrobial purposes, it is for conductivity.

When you are done with the pad incinerate it. Then see if you can find the silver. Then weigh it. If its anything like bonding wires in ic chips it will be tough to see with the naked eye.

The amount is too small, I guess. It's like beaten gold. There is a precious metal content but not enough that refining pays off.

But do you know what I have head 2 years ago! Silver screws - they were really made of sterling silver. I have had just 20 or so but it was a good deal because the seller thought they were just normal steel screws.

Most of the one I have seen have had a hard grey pellet. It looks like an ash Smartie. This is made from AgCl this does contain silver, however the form the silver is in make refining less than ideal. Dry AgCl is difficult to process and it the silver content is 75% of the AgCl weight. They credited me for sterling silver. And the melted down the stuff and the x-ray showed about 92%. I was also surprised but hard to believe that the x-ray failed. Probably an import from Europe?
