Reading a recent post about CRT disposal issues has got me thinking the last few days.
Why do I scrap phone systems and computers? I mean let's be honest. Why do I do what I do?
I guess the politically correct, greenie weenie answer would be to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and that's great. I'm all for keeping electronics and anything else that can be recycled out of landfills.
It's been said many times before and I'll say it again. We live in a disposable world. If it's broke, throw it away and buy a new one.
I have been talking to one of my contacts about their old phone system. They are purchasing a new system and they want their old one "recycled".
Well sure I can recycle it and the 2 battery banks also and make about 2 grand in the process. The question is would I spend 2 days tearing this down, hauling it off, processing it and recycling it if I wasn't making any money off of it? Hell no!! It can sit there and collect dust for all I care.
I'm just being honest guys and gals. I've found buyers for everything I scrap except for plastic and I hope that changes soon.
So this brings me to another question I've seen asked on this forum several times. Where does your scrap end up?
To be perfectly honest, I have no idea. I sell to the person who gives me the best price like most here do. I didn't say all.
If my circuit boards end up in a container headed for China that's on my buyer, or his buyer, or his buyer.
I obtain and process scrap. I sell what I can, recycle what I can and for now plastic is going to the landfill. I feel like I've done my part and made some money in the process.
