The untold story is the amount of volume they need to be profitable with a furnace...

Creative wasn't pitching to be a consumer... they were a processor. Closed loop's business model is to be a consumer. They require a certain amount of glass to get going... I have faith they will finally get going.
How big does this problem have to get before we see subsidies from the government (garnished from the original manufacturers). I can get a few million dollars to put up a windmill that will likely never pay for itself, but if I open a plant to recycle hazardous monitors the government steps on my neck until I go broke. What is wrong with this picture. If its a volume issue then each state should have a dedicated recovery site where this can be dealt with economically.
Plan B: ship it all back to China..
BTW, I wish my brain would come up with a revolutionary/profitable way to recycle these things. I'd be a billionaire! Seems as illusive as perpetual motion I fear.
I cannot say as I blame them for dropping their R2. I DO hope they will follow through and finish what they started however.
Certifications like R2 are just BS anyways. Someone made up some standards and change an EXORBITANT amount of money to get it while marketing it to other companies and the public and a "needed thing". Most companies do not care...there certainly are some and many of the larger ones just want to be able to toot their horn to the public "SEE, we are following these cool certifications by only using those vendors...doesn't it make us look GREAT?". They really could care less in most instances, it is just good PR.
I don't want to sound negative, but made up certifications are just that. I could make one up and if I had enough marketing dollars, make the public and really most companies feel they HAD to have it. Because "being certified" gives the illusion that non certified people aren't doing it right.
Again, I hope they just follow their business model, build the furnace and be a destination for all that CRAP (CRT glass). It might have to be a government subsidized venture in the end in order to handle the toxic waste since it seems extremely difficult if not impossible to make money disposing of it. Amazing we never seem to think about that when we manufacture some items.
PROFIT is made when you BUY/ACQUIRE NOT when you sell
As I recall we had a thread a year or more ago about crt glass. One of the posts linked to a Federal government taking that glass off the hazardous waste list. I assume to reasoning is that the lead does not readily leach out.
I find this change in classification interesting. 73 Mike

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked
The government has been spending billions over the years to contain radioactive waste as stable non leaching nuclear glass... so why sweat the small amount of lead in glass?
That would be interesting if the classification was changed.
I hope they fullfill, but I've seen this road with Tattooine in Cheyenne, Stone Castle in Salt Lake City, and that recycler in Kentucky.

There has been a tax on new tv sales for years that was supposed to help with recycling crts. It is why Best Buy was letting people turn them in. I guess with no way to dispose at the end of the stream it is not enough. And noe BB charges.
At least it is all in one place

Perpetual motion.. I used to ponder this many a time. Perpetual motion - constant motion. So what are constants on Earth? The gravitational pull from the moon, constantly pulling the oceans water. Gravity from the center of the earth. Etc. Magnetism... Is where it's at.
I'm going to be the one that brings up NuLife Glass again. I know people were getting sick of it before, but here goes. They have their furnace up and running in Buffalo NY and are looking at other locations. See the link below:

They haven't REALLY cared until very recently. Recycling this stuff only became in vogue a few years back...well in huge volumes. Like everything, when old tech FINALLY has the nail in the coffin (LCD/LED is SO prevalent in the market now), people try to find ways to make money by solving a problem...hence how do we get rid of all this leaded glass.

I find scrap non the less
Actually, in the old days CRT tubes weren't as much of a problem, because CRTs were still in production. The old tubes could be used in the process of making new tubes. But, those days are over....
I wonder how much actual Lead metal is in those CRT's?
And what is the future of the metal Lead and whats its prices going to be?
Like what's the main consumer of Lead and how much can they afford to pay for it?
Obviously non radioactive lead is going to soon be nonexistent as well.
And can it be made into bricks to entomb Fukushima etc, or used in radioactive waste disposal?
