Alright, I just wanna say, you need to hop down off the cross there, buddy.

That "mad" you're sensing is just the people who have been on this forum for years, and who have READ THIS FORUM for years rolling their eyes at yet another new visitor asking the same questions that have been covered numerous times in this forum. Then, when said new visitor wasn't not only spoon-fed the answers, but not spoon-fed the answers that he was already convinced that he was going to hear, he got mad.

10 tons is hella weight. It's way more than I'll ever see unless & until I grow way more contacts. But it's likely that the people you're looking at dealing with wouldn't bother to sweep 10 tons off the floor if it fell. They run so much weight 10 tons ain't squat to them. You're a one-off guy who's already said you don't know how to sort boards... if you show up with 10 tons of ""motherboards"" and it turns out you've got everything from actual motherboards down to brown TV boards in your gaylords, then you're gonna be in for a very rude awakening when instead of a big 30% check, the refiner sends you a big 30% BILL for processing your load.

I suggest you back up & read these forums. Learn to sort your boards. Find out exactly what it is you have, and sell it to someone who knows what they are doing and sends ten tons of properly sorted material regularly, to a refiner they've worked with before. THAT is where you'll make the best return on your money until you become the guy that can regularly ship ten tons of properly sorted material directly to a refiner.

Speaking of sorting boards what are the little wifi boards considered?

I have a feeling that WiFi boards is something that can attract 'higher than escrap prices'.
Something to do with some WiFi boards being of a better quality/higher baud rates/recyclable.

There's a sub market in China where they buy specific parts and use them to make new items.
The little LCD screens, WiFi boards, tablets, CCD cameras from laptops.
They figure out what they want to make, find escrap with the required parts and buy it, make the item and sell it domestically.
Once they have a buying market for their item, they may start buying brand new parts, much cheaper in bulk, and manufacture for a export market.

The best example I have of this is a family business that made scrolling LED message boards/advertising signs.
They used a certain chip out of a certain cellphone to control the board.
When the cellphone was manufactured the makers needed a certain programme to control the Text message setup.
They found it was cheaper to just buy a existing proven standalone chip and use that in the phone, the time saving in development ment they could sell a new function in a cellphone earlier than their rivals.
Of course next year the programs/chip was incorporated into other chips in the phone.

The sign maker used this chip,, recycled its cheaper than the new chip, manufactured the signs using other recycled parts for a domestic market, made a profit, set up the manufacturing plant, grew it to the point they could export and was able to get better prices for new parts in the long run.

Catalytic converter refineries was the context of my post, read it again.
Do you really want to call what I said asinine? Let's pretend you didn't say that, don't go down that road.

OP contacted me back in April, I gave him lots of information about how the business works. He has popped up here, leading me to believe he was a different person, but I treated him to the same advice.

Allow me to give everyone some advice. BE HONEST. Give us buyers an honest answer when we ask how much material you have, what you have and so forth. IF you claim to have unusual quantity and I quote you a high, low margin price it's because you are creating less work for me to do at that price point making it affordable. This is a fast way to get on the bad side of a buyer when you are not forthcoming with your material. It's not a race, it's certainly not a contest of any sort, accurately describing your material on hand is EXACTLY the way to do business. For this reason scrap yards broker contracts as a protection measure against weight inflation and material quality. If the seller isn't up to the task, ultimately for that scrap yard, it won't hurt their bottom line...but it does hurt mine.

last piece of advice today: It's ok for everyone to make money. The time spent chasing pennies on the ground eats up time, and time ultimately is the nondenom we cannot get back. Oh and while your chasing around extra pennies, your money isn't yet yours and you aren't making any extra in the meantime. Buy, sell, buy, sell, develop good business relationships, continue this process of buying and selling until your growth requires you to change your rhythm. Getting ahead of yourself will bankrupt you. Of the five largest board buyers I know of in the United States, only one does their own refining in house. Of the three or four largest processors I know of, only two have ebay stores. Think about this carefully. Niche markets and buyers exist because they have proven to be better suited than the person selling them the material. Some might say "Oh you are just defending your business." Sure am, and everyone else who buys here. There is roughly a dozen or more ESTABLISHED buyers of all kind of things here. These people represent probably more than a century of experience in the market. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SERVICE.

Bingo, I work with manufacturers overseas who do EXACTLY this. Not everything I'm buying has a ebay market, but some of the strangest things have a remanufacturing purpose.

Wow... funny how people in this industry can spot a bull$#!++er even through forum posts.

When you can't sort boards at all, but you just fell into 10 tons of high grade ewaste.... hmmmmmmmm.

To the OP of this thread. Why would anyone on the forum want to give you the recipe for success when the old timers are already in the thick of things? No offense to the folks that have been here on the forum for a long time.

To the OP of this thread. Have you done your homework? Are you sure on your yields from a certain type on PCB ?

To the OP is your pockets deep enough to withstand a dramatic down turn in the metals market?

My advice to everyone is to be a high grader or a so called cherry picker in your scrap processing.

No disrespect to the buyers here on the forum but if the members here on the forum think that the buyers are basing the buying price they pay for scrap is based on the spot price they are being gulliable.

Not really what I was insinuating there. He sent me an email that was connected from april. I just don't like people who tell me things like "Ohhh yea, I've got 250 i7s what can you do on those?" I don't need someone to exaggerate what they have to get my attention. I give the best possible customer service whether you show up with a bed full of stuff or a Ryder truck. The frequency this is happening is becoming alarming on this forum, I just ask people to be humble, respectful and HONEST about doing business.

I openly state this too. If you need help, ASK. Half my day is answering questions and doing paperwork these days. Use resources, earn your time, don't exploit people.

And you would get the same service from me with 30 that you would with 3,000. That is the long and short of my point to be made. I didn't intend to be the integrity police lol.

Im not the integrity police either. I read a couple of forums and have for a good 10 years. I read this forum when it first come online.

To be honest you have 2 kinds of scrappers. The first is the smash and grab scrapper that is looking for a quick payday. It doesn't matter what the resale value is it goes to the scrap yard.

The second scrapper will do some homework and think about getting the most out of the scrap. This scrapper isn't looking for a fast payday.

The worst part about scrapping is there are a lot of braggarts in this business. Im not talking about hauling in steel. I am talking about ewaste. The money is in ewaste. Theres money to be made in steel but how hard are you working to get it to the yard?

With ewaste a lot of people don't know what to look for. People get ahold of ewaste and they think they have hit the lottery.

This is just a little list what people need to look for and hold back.

Any old telecom boards that are through hole heavily populated with ic chips.
Boards that are heavily populated with tophat transistors or ics that have a gold tab. Do a search on tophat transistors on the web.
Memory boards that have a bga style chip
    hard drive boards
Last but not least 14 to 16 pin chips that have a gold cap and gold leads on them. These will be clean socket pulled chips with no sloder on them. These have 10 grams or better in gold in them. Some people on the forum gave me a hard time and wanted to argue about the yields on these chips before. These chips are worth 250 dollars a pound to the seller.

As far as scrap ewaste I feel the good days have passed. The amount of good stuff out there is fewer by the day. Cheaper electronics have replaced what was. If you can resell working stuff much better than scrap prices. Even electronic regulations on household electronic waste disposal will not help bring up the prices. If gold gets back to $2000 an ounce it may help but as less and less gold or PM's on the boards it may not be as good as it was...
