Cold and snow are definitely factors in the mix but it's possibly more about low light conditions. The short winter days and long nights wear you down. Some say there's survival value in it. Up until a couple of hundred years ago people lived by the seasons. People worked hard during the spring, summer, and fall to put up enough food and supplies to carry them through the upcoming winter. Wintertime was a time of scarcity with little or nothing coming in. If you ran out of food halfway through ... your family would die of starvation.
That's why our bodies are telling us to reduce activity and conserve calories when light conditions are low. We haven't evolved to live in this new modern world just yet.
Opposite that is the land of the midnight sun where people get so amped up on sunlight that it's harder to idle down and get some rest. That's the time of the year when the folks up North should be working extra hard to put up enough to carry them through their harsh winters.

A number of years ago i installed fluorescent lighting in the shop that simulates daylight. After that, it wasn't a problem to go ten or twelve hours a day on
e-waste as long as there was enough supply coming in to keep me busy. Last year, they switched over the lighting at work to high output led's. The crew is more productive this year & the general mood on the job is noticeably improved.
There might be something to the whole idea ?
