    Cool Interesting Find On GovDeals

Well, I don't know how many of you explore govdeals.com, but I was on there searching in Georgia the other day and ran across this listing. 6,047 MacBook Airs 2012-2014, most with power cables. The seller, a school system, wanted to start off at $50/device. The total is now $345,020.00. Now I am not sure if this is still per device (which works out to be $2.08 million) or not, but its one hell of an auction! Surely the biggest running total I've seen on there in a long time, if not of all time. It still has 12 days left, so I'm interested to see what happens. I thought some of you might find this interesting. If I had a spare $2.08 million laying around, I'd buy this! LOL

I don't know what amazes me more: the fact that there are than many mac books in a single lot or the fact that a company is about to drop over 345K on a single transaction. Definitely will be watching what this auction does.

Well, at $50 per, that would be 302,300ish, so I am thinking he got his asking price. But, I can't imagine those things being worth $50 each.

It's also easier to refurbish an Apple than a Windows PC in the sense of software licensing. It may be a niche market, but Apple stuff can do very well. At $50-60 per, someone can make good money on those. The problem is that with 14 pallets of the things, you run into:

    1. Having enough money to even buy the lot
    2. Trucking it
    3. Flooding the market and lowering the value of what you have due to the sheer volume

Honestly for a big E-waste outfit these lots are chump change........They need this amount of product to keep full staffs working as well as the inventory......The trucking of 14 pallets is minimal but does cost money.........Flooding the market is already happening for these units.......There are 1000's dumped into the refurbished market daily worldwide..........Good luck to all

It sounds good in theory but it's not so good in practice. Somebody could take a beating on that one. It's high school stuff with a bit of age on it. You know how it is with teenagers. Their bodies are still growing and they're a bit clumsy.Things tend to get dropped accidentally. You get a high percentage of broken screens / damaged keyboards.

    Add to that:

You have to replace many of the batteries and chargers because they're worn out.

    Worst of all:

There's that darned pass lock & icloud activation lock. There might be a workaround for the passlock but the activation lock is on the apple server and seems to be unbreakable.

    Just an opinion:

I think you would have to be very very good at working with Mac products to have any hope of turning a profit on this one.

H.S. stuff comes through so damaged that you might only be able to get 20% of the units back in service. The rest would have to be parted out or scrapped for ewaste value.

So, let me get this straight.... You are actually trying to make the case that teenagers are likely to treat things more roughly than other people? Okay, Mr. Teenagist….

The yowins downloaded a new app for the ipads the school system bought last year. Siri squeals with delight and flashes her boobies when they toss em' back and forth like a frisbee.

Well, I went back and looked at the auction now that it has ended. This school system did not use iCloud or anything Apple related. It was all proprietary software. Most schools are like that, because of the obvious frustrations with iCloud locks.
Anyway, the freaking lot ended with a final price of $850,010! WHAT THE ACTUAL FLYING F***?! WHY? Quality alone is not guaranteed, nor is it common across all the devices.
But still, what would you do with 6,047 MBAs?

Lets say mike was right and his previous calculation of $150 on the low end is correct anf every single laptop is in working order. Thats $907,050 or a $57,000 profit. Now I know some people have buyers over seas for stuff like this at a premium. I personally would have never paid this much for this lot but hey if you have a buyer and all you have to do is win the auction listing and send it off over seas for a quick profit. Well more power to you.
