    Direct TV Access Cards

These little plastic cards that go into the receiver box. They have a square on the back that LOOKS gold, but is it really?
It's the similar thing that is on SIM cards.

    Worth Saving?

This is a picture of a SIM card I found on google. But that is what I am talking about.

I sold a card on ebay for $50. I wonder if that's what they bought it for. At the time I couldn't see any reason anyone would want to buy it, but gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised it sold for what it did.

Now that is an interesting bit of information. I was planning on asking my refiner about them on Monday but I think I will be checking out good old Ebay.

The older cards they used to be able to bootleg and open up all the dish channels with them. Might be what they bought for that high price.

Must have been like those old machines you could buy to descramble the channels on the old huge satellite dishes. A friend of mine had one when I was in high school and we used to get the pay-per-view wrestling matches :-)

It's coming back to me now...I didn't originally list just the card.

This was about 4 or 5 years ago. Was helping dad on a rental clean out and had the receivers. Jumped on ebay to see what they were going for. Listed the receiver and a gal out of Canada offered 50 for the card. I said sweet, done deal. Hardly costs anything to ship/mail the card.

    YMMV.

Not all of them are that popular. Certain one's can be hacked while later one's cannot, I cannot tell you the difference, but I'll bet if you did some google searching you'd have some answers.

I think I read on the gold refining forum that it takes about 1,000 SIM cards to get an ounce of gold. Still, at $1,500 an ounce that makes them worth more than $1 each.

I need to correct myself here. I went back and re-read the post over on the gold refining forum and 1,000 cards yeids a gram, not an ounce, of gold. Little harder eh?

There are a fair amount of things. Do some searching around on here and you will learn. The search tool should become your best friend.

If your interested in scraping gold you should know that the gold found in electronics is always 1 karat and while 24 karat gold sells for 1510 per oz 1k doesn't, its worth 1/24 of that or about 63 per oz, and its measured in troy ounces, a troy ounce weighs 31 grams not 28.. not really worth it unless you have a lot.

Google "Gold Refining Forum" and go there. There's a fairly extensive list of stuff that has gold in it. Gold is in lots of consumer electronics but it's usually a very thin plating on the connectors. Still, people are making money off it.
