E-waste processing

It’s late and I am tired but I wanted to see if anyone could enlighten me as to how ewaste i.e. gold bearing boards get processed. Are they shredded? Then go threw a chemical process to remove the gold? Has anyone ever done this from start to finish with all the chemicals?



I've been wondering with the right equipment and Skill (which I don't have) If this could be done at home or perhaps at a work lab?

I know the chemicals and procedures can be dangerous, but are there any Chemist types that have done this from start to end?

Best thing I can tell you is to join that forum and read like crazy, and heed their cautions, cause some of the stuff they use is very dangerous if not handled correctly.

As Mechanic688 said its very dangerous....We are a computer recycling company an we wont do that in house. We send it out so that its done right an at a "pro" refiner they are able to get MORE gold out than you would be able to at home. Sending it out is better in the long run if you have that kind of amount.

I am new on this forum, been in the business 7 years... no shortage of people who want to be "refiners".... like they are telling you above, let the professionals deal with it. It is a very complicated process (not to mention dangerous!)... no easy money to be made here.

We don't promote the home refining here as there is plenty of pro's available. There is other forum's available for the recovery process discussions.

I think you are right. I do not want that people get poisoned but still as i have learned these information i feel responsible for sharing it and let other people know that there are ways to recover gold from boards that are cheap require little labour(you can process whole boards), but require great amount of knowledge.

On the note of how dangerous this is yesterday i puchased 15 towers and 2 large wheelbarrows full of motherboards from a guy that tried it and spent 2 weeks in the hospital with burned lungs.He will be on oxygen for the rest of his life.Unless you have extensive chemistry knowledge and a lot of expensive equipment its not worth trying.NO AMOUNT OF MONEY IS WORTH YOUR LIFE.

When I started thinking hard about the ewaste my initial thought was to recover the gold myself. I have a good friend who is a jeweler who buys gold and prays awesome prices. So I started looking at the process and all the chemicals it takes. I looked up how to dissolve the gold, then reform the gold, and finally melt it back down to what we know as gold. The more I looked the more I thought man this is going to be a pain in the butt.

I had initially been really frustrated by some of the reviews I had read on people who sold ewaste. Then I searched for a review on a website that buys scrap and one of the first links was this site. After poking around and reading that review I realized that that website was ripping people off but I found a whole bunch of other people who posted their prices in the open here. It was at that moment I realized that its not worth it to recover yourself. I can deal with making less money for an easier payday. I will happily ship my scrap to someone and get a check other than risk dealing with Hydrochloric and Nitric Acid. I dont mind someone making a buck or two off me in a mutually beneficial relationship. I'm just glad I searched for a review of that site and ended up here.

Nitric n hydrochloric acid isn't dangerous unless u are a fool. I deal with these n many other chemicals on a daily basis at my work...I have pondered the thought of attempting to refine but am busy enough th way it is...leave it to the pros
