i just pieced apart bout 8 computers to get a feel for how hard it is... seems worth the time, but what do i do with the power supplies? do i toss them with the tower, or do they sell on their own?
also as for the disc drives and also power supply, do i need to take the steel shells off?
The power supplies I will buy at $0.30cents as is when you ship them to me.
The cd drives I will pay you $0.15 cents per pound for them as well.
They are worth alittle more than tin an should not be tossed in with your tin.

Power supplies at the yard I go to are .25 a pound but if you break them down and piece it out you could probably double that...just depends if you have more time then money.

I make more by braking them down.....steel shell>steel pile....usually 2 extruded alum heat sinks>extrude alum bin......transformer>motor bin.....lots of #2 insulated wire(1.30lb for me)>insul. wire bin.......2 or 3 copper "dingle berries">motor bin.....just finished about 18 of them. Next time I do a batch, I think I'll weigh out about 10 of them to see the weight of all separate items.....

Dingle berries? I think those are what I've just been unwinding copper from today and throwing the round, ceramic prices away. Am I throwing money away?

Not sue what he means by dingle berries, but I had 2 of those little green "ceramic" pieces yesterday. I didn't throw them away because they were magnetic. I threw them in the iron bucket. Must be ceramic coated. Check yours with a magnet.Originally Posted by JacksDaddy

Oh those responses made me laugh pretty hard!!!! I just have never known what to call them....and they are ferrite wrapped in copper. I didn't think about what others might call them!!....LOL

I read somewhere I can throw these in mymotor or transformer pile.
do transformers (like ones on phone chargers and computers) go with number 2 copper wire or motors?

That depends on you. If you clean them, ( remove the copper ) you get # 2 price for the copper and the rest goes in your steel pile.
If you don't clean them you get very little at motor price.
With a sharp wood chisel and a hammer one could remove the copper in less then a minute or two.

I have been reading through some of the old threads just to see what people talked about back when this forum started out. Every once in a while I will post, hopefully I can help out a newbe. What to do with power suplies, it's realy up to you and what works best for you. I can only tell you what I do with them and this is what works best for me. I open them up (4 screws) then I pull the board out (4 screws) the only thing I take off the boards are the wires(put in insulated bucket) take the fan out (4 screws). Steel .10#, wires 1.00#, power board .40# and fan (electric motor) .35#. I can do these in about 2 minutes. There are buyers on here that buy pwoer suplies but it's not worth shipping to me.

There not low grade, there one step up from low grade. I get .35# for low grade.
