the alu base on the hard drive it is formed then machined is it considered extruded like heat sinks or is it something else.
also the shiney thin material found in farious places in the comp, it looks like stainless sheet but is some what magnetic, I cant tell from the spark test, is there a chemical test for this as there is for nickle

Its normally cast, not extruded. I think a lot of them are Magnesium not Ali.Originally Posted by olddude

On the other hand, most Ali has, say 5%, magnesium in it so having Ali with a little magnesium isn't that much of a problem.

these are definately not like any cast I ever saw. they are heavy good alu. more like milled. then cast.

Yes, milled from a cast blank I would say. why would they make a HDD from a big machined chunk of billet ally?
Too expensive when mass producing..

a metalugist student friend of mine confirmed they are deffinately CAST. but not 100% Alluminium. They are an Alloy, he had a look at a case I took him, said it was most likely a Hyper-Eutectic Alloy (like high performance pistons) a high carbon content alluminium/magniesium/manganiese alloy. Great thermal and anti deformation properties, (meaning won't expand or shrink with temp change as much) and machines up WAY better than pure AL.
Well thats what he told me anyway
