Hard Drive Details Please...

What parts of a scrap 3.5" hard drive are saleable? I know about the aly case, the stainless lid, the circuit board, the motor and the gold connectors.



Is there anything I am missing? Are the actuator/magnets saleable?

other than scrapping the little copper coil in the end of the actuator and the al. arm itself i dont really know who would buy the actuator the magnets on the other hand seem to be very popular on ebay from time to time any time i have sold them i'll get a bout a dozen or so of them and sell them as a lot

magnets seem to sell well on ebay. I currently have about 3 pounds of them myself im getting ready to sell.

PTS, when you pull out a pair of magnets from a drive, do you separate them or do you try to sell in pairs? Also, do you remove the base and sell just the magnets or together?

When I take them out I just let them all stick together and sell the whole thing as a clump. I don't take them off the brackets either. Most of the time if you try to take them off the bracket they disintegrate. They also need to keep the coating on them to keep them from rusting to nothing in a short time. SO I sell them in bunches with brackets still on. This isn't my add on ebay but this is how I do it.

Wow, I never would have thought of selling these! I've never sold anything on ebay - would it be worth it after shipping? I see in that ad, the bid so far is only 99 cents - for how much do they normally sell?

Yeah if you look at this listing they sold just 2 magnets for $5.

Hard Drive platters are coated in a thin film of platinum/palladium/gold alloy. They can be sold on Ebay for precious metal extraction. There seems to be a wide range of selling prices/platter on Ebay. Some platters must have more precious metal vs. others. Does anyone know how to identify/distinguish/categorize platters into more vs. less valuable based on weight or precious metal content?

There is no Palladium or Gold in the coating only a very VERY tiny amount of Platinum.
They are a cobalt alloy with a miniscule amount of Platinum thrown in.
I recovered the coating from about 200 platters and then processed them for the Platinum.
I wish i hadn't bothered!! lol

I now throw them into my Aluminium pile.

I wonder how long it would take to get 100kg of platters?
