Does this old CPU still work?

How can you tell if an old CPU still works?

Maybe the computer from which it was yanked had something else wrong with it. Whether or not a CPU still has functionality can sometimes greatly influence its value to collectors. Some collectors just want to look at them in a glass case, and some want to know that they still work. Working = Price Premium

Anybody know a way to test functionality apart from plugging or soldering the thing back onto an old motherboard that has all its working parts minus a CPU?

A CPU cannot be tested without having a compatible motherboard and memory.

That is correct as far as I know...I could be wrong but i do not know of any kind of testing that could be done like this unless they have some kind of machine out there that would do such a thing.

Turn the machine on and count the beeps. The beeps tell you a trouble code, most machines will be video, or ram problem. No beeps and it boots to the ROM screen then it works, No beeps and it stays dark...uh oh!. If you've interested in collector value, check it before you pull it, then static bag it once it's tested.
