From reading the treads I have started saving all my ends from USB and monitor-type ends (both female and male). However, I even save the ends from other cables like phone jacks, wall plugs, keyboards, mouses, etc.
2 Quesations:
1) I know there is some brass in the wall plugs, but is there any market for this other stuff or am I just collecting for nothing?
2) Should i look to ebay first for my old skuzzie cables and old printer cables before cutting them?

1) i thik phone cables are gold plated as well not sure about others
2) SCSI cables are hit and miss printer cables just cut them up.
The brass ends on all plgs etc I pull out with pliers. Im in real ambitious I heat with a electric hair dryer or heat gun. Then they go in the brass bucket...

plus when you pull the brass plug ends out you usually get a little bit of copper with it

if you pull the prongs BEFORE you cut the plug off it is more likely to come out clean. I've had best luck with vise-grips.

btw, jerimiah...if you hold the phone ends up next to one you know is a gold end in sunlight you'll soon be able to tell the difference.

Is this a problem since copper is worth more than brass and the copper content of the brass would vary anyway? I would think any yard docking you for some extra copper in your brass is being dishonest.plus when you pull the brass plug ends out you usually get a little bit of copper with it

Good point Otto....I'll ask....I'm just so used to the requirement of everything being "clean". Thanks for mentioning it.

I don't strip power cords, so the little extra that comes out with my ends i twist up, snip off, and throw in my copper bucket, so, i'm not trying to weigh down the brass

Nope copper does not make brass dirty. Least not at any yard ive been too.

They don't mind a little copper in the brass here. I don't even pull the prongs out completely. Just grab the plug with one pair of pliers and give the prongs a little twist with another pair and they snap right off. Every now and then they come out on the more rubbery plugs.
Eat. Sleep. Scrap.

It's my understanding from reading PTS's computer indentification post that you should scrap both of these types http://www.flickr.com/photos/44373382@N05/6859757387 of cable ends to place in with your monitor ends. Am I right?

I would say yes. I havnt sent any of my ends to a buyer yet but I throw both of those types in my bucket.

I want to confirm that PTS is correct in assumption above. Can a buyer confirm this. As a side note, i've figured out that I can fit about 16 pounds worth of cable ends in a Medsize flate-rate box.

I would buy brass with copper attached to it as brass breakage. The way we buy something is the way we have to sell it to the mill. Even though copper is worth more than the brass, we would either have to sell it to the mill for a lower price than clean brass or pay one of the guys on the yard to clean it. It could be brass with gold nuggets attached to it and it would still be contaminated according to mill standards.

that is a sad fact, don't make sence but, most yards I deal with will take the majority metal, price it as mixed or dirty, and pay the lower price. but it is worth arguing with the grader over.
