Does anyone take the time to break apart the copper& Aluminum Heat sink combos and take them to the "Yard" or do you just sell them for whatever price your E-Waste buyer is buying for?
My box is getting full, and not sure which direction i want to go.

I get copper/aluminum radiator price for mine. Currently $1.30 a pound. Unless they seperate easily.

Honestly..I don't know. I've only EVER taken cars and computer cases (Along with 800#'s of speakers) to my yard. I know Copper is a premium price...Just don't know if it's worth the effort.Originally Posted by olddude

My yard buys heat sinks as clean AL extrusion for .65 per pound. If they have steel on them they pay dirty extrusion price which is about .42 per pound. I don't see too many CU/AL heat sinks but most places buy them as radiators.
most of mine i know if they will be easy or hard. I usually give the hard ones a few good wacks with a 15 pound sledge. If they dont come appart i throw them in the alum/copper bin.

The heatsinks with the copper plugs in the bottom will pop out with a little persuasion and the copper bottom/alum top and fins are pretty easy to separate in a vise. The copper tubed ones you just have to cut the tubes off flush and sell them for copper/alum mixed. Don't know of any alum/steel mixed,,,,??

The ones I get with the copper plugs I just throw to the concrete real hard and they pop out. So if 5 seconds is worth your time to almost triple your money I would do it. I think I just got an idea for my first video ala biggerhammer. Ill call it "Fun with heatsinks"

I have not tried to seperate the ones with the big plug. I had a bunch with the tubes up through al fins. I might try the seperation next time. I have had several laptop ones that are a mix and fused together. They come apart, but have been leaving the copper pretty dirty.
I guess the next time I get a few, I will seperate and do the math. The ones with the tubing and fins are very prevalent in Dell computers. They are large and in charge. I just gave up based on the small laptop ones and figured the rest would garnish the same results.
They are not that hard to do...but you do need a shop press....don't do use the hammer to punch them out...one slip and trust me...your finger will hurt like hell.
As someone stated clean them if you can..if not move on.

THe plug type ones I use my sawsall. Just cut both sids of the plug till you hit the copper then throw it to the ground and it comes apart real easy.

I think we used a small chisel then pried up and popped it out, clamped in a vise of course.
