Good stuff. But I see no one has mentioned about the steel ring that surrounds the picture tube itself. That's another 5-10 lbs for a few seconds worth of time. How I remove it without breaking the glass is by using an angle grinder. In a straight line width-wise of the band, grind it until you see no sparks, then all you do is pry it up with a flathead and peel it off, it's just glued on.
M688, I DID see that...and that is what I meant about jinxing me. After that it seemed like 9 out of 10 were au, and I cursed you every time !!! jk Now I have a big pile of Au ones to strip.

Were they ground up I could double the weight in each gaylord.

Hoss, when breaking up the boards, are you separating all of the surface mount components from the actual boards? I've been taking the heatsinks, transformers and inductors, which i think most people do. Some have said they go after the ICs and transistors as well. Wondering if anyone is salvaging the remaining components and, if so, what this stuff might be worth?
I'm not trying to get a rise out of anyone.

Otto: I do rip all the heatsinks off, as well as any CBM/wire/etc. I take SOME IC chips off. It really just depends. Id say maybe 1 in 100 circuit boards i take an IC chip off.
Primo: Gotcha. I just didnt word myself right. I actually didnt realize you had a good amount of TV's and such. I thought you were still on the pick-up truck load level. My bad. You're right then, time is money. Honestly, if you have a choice, don't take the TV's. Simply arent worth it. I've worked out a perfect schedule for myself. If i dont stick to it exactly, i'm losing money. It's a fine line. Mainly because you have many different levels of breaking it down. You have the "un-wrapping" (taking the back of the tv off) as i call it lol. Then breaking down the board. Breaking down the cone. Then cleaning the board. Cleaning the AL heatsinks, breaking apart certain CBM's that are easily broken down for copper salvage. Finally, stripping the degaussing cable (if it's worth it). So their are many levels.
If you are serious about doing this, MAKE LISTS. Time yourself! You need to get it down to a science, as to how long it takes you to break down each type, and each size. You'll soon get to the point where you can just look at a TV and be like " 25 total minute breakdown, worth $3.11, not worth it". It's all a matter of trial and error. That's what i was trying to get out in my first post. Just came out in a rough way haha. Blame it on my roots.
Question on the flyback transformer thingies - what do you sell them as? My yard wont buy them as copper bearing so i usually throw them as shred.

Minus the goodies he got out of it equal break even.. in My book... and just a FYI,,, You don't lose 63% of the weight by stripping the tape off the degaus wire...
and It does pays to strip the tape off,,,
If You don't have a Wirt Stripper this is what I do.. and I'll do a video on it..
I take the loop cut it in half... one end.. I place it in a vice... then hold the degaus wire out straight and snug.. use a Utility knife.. but I use a Klien Wire stripper knife and With ONe hand tug on the degauss wire, and the other hand slide the knife right on down away from Your body toward the vice... and wa la... it expose the wire.. peel it away and its all clean.. the end in the vice.. come out of the tape easy.. just pull.. the wire out of the tape ...
But I'll put a little video together on it.. its a great way to do it, I usally put about 10 degaus wire in the vice at a time.
Them Flyback transistors why take them off, its mostly plastic and ceramic with a bit of copper in it,, is there someone that actaully buy em>?
I just toss all of these into a gaylord.. and stockpile them.

I weighed out 10lbs of degaussing cable, took it to work and stripped it then took it straight to the yard afterward. I didn't get a chance to weigh it again after I stripped it but according the their scale I got paid for 10 pounds of copper. yep that's about the average breakdown I get nice job and I do strip all wires I use a separate machine for deg. wires cause it will build up a lot so I only do reg insulated though my good one even alu. wire I do cause it adds up fast and is money as for boards since the copper and alu is min and more time consuming in the time consuming process of monitors already I am happy to get 6centslb for the board whole it just goes in the tin pile except for the bigger transformers there fast to pop free and save. I usually swim in monitors sitting on about 100right now backed up but get to them when I can that's why I hired my first employee which he is going though the gambit to see if he will continue doing it next he is onto my vcr's and keyboards which should be a few weeks of work lol about 800 vcr's and about 4000keyboards lol
