Hello Everyone! Sorry it took me so long to get back here; i was juggling work while trying to tear into as many of those towers as i could before i went home for the day. I took some pictures of what i have found but i remember reading something about a limit on posted photos or something to that effect. I am super tired so i'm just going to post maybe 1 or 2 and then figure out a way to have them somewhere else with a link that leads there. By the time i get through these i should enter a tower tear down contest or something, i would probably come in 4th or 5th depending. lol. Any thoughts/advice/ideas/anything really that anyone would like to contribute is still greatly appreciated! Posting then bedtime...ZZZzzz....Grr can't figure it out too tired... i found a black box thing that had a huge gold colored heat spreader (i think that's what it is anyways) the black box part says pentium II so i assume that it's a processor anyone know anything about these? Be back early in the am!

The gold heat thingie is called a heat sink. Open a free photo account at Photobucket ( http://photobucket.com/) to upload from your computer, then from there to here by putting your curser on the pic you uploaded and a box drops down. One of the links says "direct link" just click that and it will tell you it's copied. Then here in your posting just click the lil square looking box right above where your posting and hit paste and it should put the big pic right here. If you try to do it thru here only the pic will be as small as my kitty pic.

Julie, I am very impressed that you jumped on this with such zeal and determination. Your school is lucky to have you with them.
    Looking forward to your pictures.

    Julie,

As far as the monitors/tv's go, you could break them down yourself and turn in the copper/aluminum/wire locally to a scrap yard near you.

I would also do this for the metal cases that the computers come in.

As far as the goodies that come inside the PC's, I would highly recommend (like everyone else has) to sell to a ewaste buyer here on the forum. Most of them, will arrange the shipping and walk you through the entire process, and when it comes time for payment, they will deduct the cost of shipping, and either paypal you the rest, or send you a money order or check.

If I was closer to CA, I would be happy to help the school out. Very unique on idea for a fundraiser. That gives me an idea for schools around here.

Do you know who had the idea for this? Just curious as most just do car washes, baking sales, raffle tickets, etc.

Ummmmmm...something smells fishy...all the information she could possibly want is here with a little research. How many people are scrapping computers for a fund raiser ?

It is something new and creative!

Plus, all she was asking for, is if she was getting ripped off. What is so fishy about that?

We all get our pickups from a variety of places, and I know schools are getting more and more into recycle programs now a days too.

Hi Julie, Sorry to come accross as harsh earlier. 2 word's...Cell Phones ! I think used and broken cell phones would be perfect for your situation. It's a common e-cycle thing for quite a few fund raisers. Some of cell phone buyers you can find through this forum provide free shipping of the product to them. I would think if you have a large group of people and they tell 2 friends about what your doing, and they in turn tell 2 more friends, you could probably do quite well.

I agree with scrapinma. I know there is several Churches, businesses, and other non profits that focus their e-cycling programs solely around cell phones. As many know, providers manufacturer new phones several times per year in most cases. Most people want the hottest, next best product, so they will shell out the hundreds to get it. In turn, never having a use for the old ones.

I know most Churches collect them and donate them to battered woman's shelters.

[QUOTE=parrothead;54732]Take a look at this link. This is boardsort. I am not recomending selling to boardsort, but it is a good reference. I actually recomend selling these parts to a forum member.

    Thanks for the link parrothead!

I did introduce myself in the introduction place... before i started this thread. I am planning on filling out my profile info with more detail soon too! I'm about halfway through the towers now. Thank you so much for the photobucket referral I am going to sign up for an account here in a second. It gets a little difficult trying to tear these suckers down, mind the customers that come into our showroom, answer the phones, and do my real job all at once!

i think those photos can be set to private and still show through your link. maybe someone with more photobucket experience can say for sure. take the memory sticks and put in one pile, the heatsinks (aluminum) into another, all the add in boards in another, and the CPU's in another. The CPU's are usually held in place with a lever that swings up to release it. That PII CPU you were looking at with the big heatsink on it has 4 tiny hex screws holding it together, you'll need a hex tip allen wrench (your dad or brother might have one in their tool box, it's a common tool and size) to get it apart

Starting to wrap up my dismantling adventure - my knuckles are busted up, hands are dry cracked & have little scrapes all over them, to top it off i even kneeled on my screwdriver with all of my weight (and that hurts!) which gave me a bruised knee. Now i have a pair of gloves and it's a little nicer. Anyhow i had a minute earlier so i was looking over the forum doing a little research before i ask a redundant question although i am sure it will happen. Down to my last tower - which is a server- then the big tear down is done. I found conflicting advice on what should be torn down further. I know that the PII CPU needs to been done and that i need to get all of the heat sinks off of the CPUS and the CPUs off of the motherboards (right?) my confusion is where to go with the drives. I ve gotten 6 CDs, 6 CDRWs, 2 DVDs, 2 DVDRWs, 12 floppys, 1 zip drive, and 9 hard drives. Which (if any) do i need to tear down further? I also learned how to embed pictures here (yay) and i will be getting some here asap! Also, before I let them go to the event people i have an apple monitor that is its own computer i think, these adapters for a laptop, another apple thing to plug stuff into, & a TiVo. Are any of these worth ripping into?
