That's what I do but you need to take it easy on it. You can tell when it gets to the copper but you'll still go through a few strands.

People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

with all due respect to Mick, that seems like overkill to me when it's so easy to do with the utility knife. (after some practice)

Yeah, Dee, it IS overkill - especially considering I use a 7" grinder. I just said it was the REALLY easy way to strip degaussing cable - more as a joke than anything. Although I have used the grinder a couple times when I got frustrated with using the box knife. I just don't like stripping that sticky crap. That's why I got so much waiting for me to do something with it. Probably just carry it in as Insulated.

That's why I cut it into 6 inch sections before I unwind, saves a little time, and makes it easy to store it if I don't want to strip it right away.

I tried that with a 4inch grinder just to see what happens.

And I really thought it would work well....

    What happened was..
The grinder disc grinds thru the top of the plastic where theres two layers of tape.

In between, where theres one layer of tape, it grinds thru it & hits the copper wire.
As it grinds thru the tape, it pulls the glue out & that stays stuck to the disc.

At the same time as it grinds the copper wire, the little copper grindings stay stuck to the disc.
Then, as the disc comes around again, it picks up more glue & drops some of the copper grit off back onto the copper wire & glue.

What I ended up with was a really sticky & gritty 'fine copper' wire with lots of sticky bits of tape stuck to it.
I couldn't get the disc to do long cuts thru the insulation & so ended up with a long bunch of sticky gritty slices to the insulation layer.

It degraded the wire a bit, I couldn't get the '#1 clean bare copper' price for it (I don't anyway, just Copper #2 price)
It didn't save time, a boxcutter knife does a better job, it just takes a while.

Incidentally, The next one I just used a boxcutter knife on it.
Looped the coil over a cupboard door knob & pushed down with my foot...

Then the cupboards screws decided to let go & the whole thing fell down the wall...

Whump, glass all over the place. Thankfully the cat wasn't at his bowl at the time.

I'm back to using a knife & looking for a stripper.

I've tried a stripper, i've tried an angle grinder, i've tried the loop deal, and ya know what? The best way i've found is just using the ole utility knife. I spend all day breaking down copper cones and degaussing cables. As long as you keep a sharp edge on yer blade it should work like butter.

I tried my first degause cable this past weekend. For me the best way I have found is to tie one end (with the extra wire) to a pole I have running between 2 2x4s. I then use a utility knife with a hook blade and start from the top and work down. Very slight cut is all you need. My first attempt I was way to heavy handed. Second attempt I had a lighter touch and din't break any wire. I would guess it is taking me 3-5 mins right now per cable.

I love those hook blades -- thanks to all of you for suggesting and re-suggesting them.

My 2 cents worth for when I do it.

Cut the wire so you can straighten it out.

Slice parallel to the wire down the whole length of the cable.

then start peeling back the tape, you have to do it from the end that allows the lower spiral of tape to lay on top of the upper spiral of tape. I'm not sure if that makes sense... you're basically using the upper piece to pull back the lower piece, instead of pulling the upper piece off of the lower.

I may have to try the rip cord trick though... that may accelerate it even more.

Yes, I have also (thanks to EVERYONE's suggestions) have found the EASIEST way, is tying one piece off, then taking a hook blade (thanks jack!), and holding the older end, and going straight talk. Just a few moments for each one!
