Today i picked up 8 smaller servers racks (2 weight 30lbs, and the other 6 weight 50lbs each). A big rack that stands itself up weighting around 90lbs. 3 Surge protectors weighting 45lbs each. And a huge rack (looks like its two racks connected together) that weights 110lbs. And a computer/server that works. I got two questions.
I paid $200 for all this and was wondering if it was a smart investment?
What would be the best way to scrap this in order for me to maximize my profits?

If the parts are all there I think you'll get your money back. Do you know if the CPUs, RAM, and HDDs are still in them? I'd guess the surge protectors are UPS units with 2 garden tractor size batteries inside? did you bring it all in, or is it still there ? What server still works? Parts are sometimes good on Ebay if they're not too old

The Harddrives are gone, but i think the cpu's and RAM are still there. I am still in high school so time spend dissembling is not a bid issue. I am just hoping to make my money back b/c i feel i overpaid.

get the model number of each one and google it, look for info on the unit from the manufacturer, also look for results in the list from ebay, to see if any of it is selling there. It's good if you can power them up, if so, you'll know if the ram and cpu are good, google those as well for ebay results, to see if they're selling, and for how much
if them, or parts from them are selling on ebay, you might try selling yours there too, even some can sell as vintage, if they're not selling, you can pull all the boards and sell them as computer scrap

I just started taking one apart and i found ten kingston ktm5780/8g RAM sticks. Maybe these servers are not so old. After doing some research i found that the RAM costs a few hundred dollars. Maybe i should simply dissemble these servers for scrap. Should i get them checked out at a computer store or something?
8 gb ram is very old I may be mistaken but I believe you got some very old equipement. I checked ebay and not much activity but high prices. Perhaps you could start at a lower price and get a buyer. I will be interested in what cpu's are in them. Mike

no, check them out yourself! set you up a work table with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse on it. Hook up the units one by one and fire them up, taking notes of what the startup screen tells you. You'll need to learn to go in to startup and find your way around, using the up/down, left/right arrows, and the enter/esc keys on the keyboard to navigate through the BIOS.
If you simply scrap them out without testing and knowing what's in them, you'll likely waste some good chances to make far more than scrap price
Don't worry about making mistakes here, they belong to you, if you get lost just power it off and start over, the education alone will be worth your investment

Selling parts from them is likely the best way to go. Whole units sell cheap and are harder, and more expensive to ship
if you found the ram sticks to be worth several hundred dollars, why are you considering scrapping them?

8GB ram sticks are not old. They should fetch $100 easy. More if they are ECC and DDR2 or higher.

Those sticks are listed from kingston @ $336 markdown from $509, or from walmart @ $288. If you can't get half that on Ebay, you aint tryin ; )
