Leave or Pull Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs)

So far I've read 21 of the 35 pages of posts in the Electronics Recycling forum (Miked was right it is like getting a bachelor's degree in e-waste recycling), but I've yet to run across the answer to whether or not LCDs should be removed from low-grade boards or left on? In other words, can they be sold seperately by the pound to a buyer?

Thanks to all the old hands on this forum for being so willing to share their knowledge. I expect to get to through to the last post in this forum sometime during the long holiday weekend. It's been quite an education. And very interesting.

depends on the buyer... i asked that question specifically to my buyer in regards to displays from things like microwaves and VCRs. he said i could leave them on.

your buyer might feel differently about them. good question, but its not for us to answer. ask the man with the cash

I'm wondering about LCDs that are on low-end boards, not appliances such as those you mention. Maybe a picture would help. Here's an example of a Futaba LCD display I found on a low-end board http://www.futaba.com/products/displ...ges/banner.jpg

I think there may be platinum in these things or gold perhaps?

Plasma screens have a silver coating in them. this can be refined with a cyanide leach process and should technically have a market value. That image looks exactly like the ones i was referring to. They are found on all sorts of low grade boards from consumer electronics. In fact, i remember reading an article about experimental but effective developments in extracting silver from plasma screens. not LCDs though, as far as i know.

I have seen gold plated contacts on the runner boards from LCDs, however. Those long flimsy strips the are along the edges of larger LCD monitors and tvs. Different from the picture you provided. The one you linked is comparable to this one, i believe

and i usually just leave them on my boards.

in the case of a board like this one:

i cant see it getting a better price than the board itself when removed. but i am often wrong, and will have to check this post later to see who's got more info

Plasma displays? I got about 10 of them once that were used in an environment where they constantly had the same image on them and it was burned in terribly. The were pretty big (55" and 42"), but I sold them to a few different TV repair shops for $30-$35 each.

How did we get to plasma tv's, this thread is about lcd's on low grade boards. The last time I sold low grade boards they made me take them off. They did not want them so I asumed they're not worth anything or my buyer would have wanted them. Of course your buyer might want them so check with them first. Just my .02

My Rule of thumb is to leave them on the boards until told to remove them. Normally yards are less picky the larger the load. As for contemplating an additional payout. Create an "i dont know" box and throw the whole board with the display in it. I throw all types of stuff in my "i dont know" box until i have time to research it.

I also have an "i dont know box"..i think this is a good practice because you might have value..and even if they dont..you can still scrap them for something..any other scrappers use an "i dont know box"?..i would be interested to know.

I have a little box of these that i have been saving... i shifted them to another container last night.
