Changing gears in business to survive.

Years ago we were into fabrication and repairing equiptment, It got to the point that we couldnt make money because it was often cheaper to park old equiptment than fix it. We got very slow as comoditys dropped and decided we could buy the old equiptment and pull a few parts scrap and make money on the rest which started us into the scrap business. It was awsome for years and we made far more than the fabrication welding shop ever did. Fast forward 8 years and again we are faced with a change. In our area competition is out of sight, often we ship containers or loads depending on what we get that barely produce a profit. Longing to get back to a 30% ish profit margin. I have shut down our recieving portion of the business and plan to concentrate on doing jobs again. We never quit doing them but we were often a few weeks out because of obligations at the shop. We are going to start subbing out the tractors for ag work and the skid steer for construction and land clearing.

We have always done the pickups but now we can be faster at it and get the ball rolling quicker.

Not sure why I felt the need to put this here, but as with all changes the future is uncertain.

You have quite a few years in business and experience at adapting to change...... I bet you'll do just fine and be back where you want to be again!

    Besides...... change can be fun:

Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.

Sounds like you've given this a lot of thought. Good luck, I think you'll do fine.
