report: breaking down 300 hard drives.

with HDs selling at around .50 per lb w/o board I just wasted a week breaking down 768 lbs. (my opinion).

I kept the magnets and the writers, (no idea where to sell them) but the rest averaged well below .665 per lb at the yard. at 300 per week (hey I'm old) and .165 per lb difference ($126.72) difference. when you add freight charge and amortize it , it will be about $300 for the weeks work.

first they tried to class the cases as die cast instead of cast. the server rails were all classed as die cast even tho half were cast.

got .18 for the motors when they were closer to MLC at .38

I am not ready to send TL yet but an ready to send pallets and gaylords. sooooo if I can get my freight down a little I will not break down any more HDs. only got about 2000lb on board and 2 more loads coming tuesday

havent figured the boards yet in the scheme of things but I will analyes those this week and report.

if you are doing just a few lbs and need the money now disreguard.

some of you are younger and faster so for you, it may be worth while.

thanks for the input, olddude. would it have been worth it to you if you got cast AL for all the bodies instead? i break them down for data destruction because i am not currently set up to wipe the drives and resell them

thats what im saying. I averaged .165 per lb better breaking them down for me it is hard work, and getting harder at my age so I am seariously considering brokering, buying and selling. my closest competitor is 600 miles away.

If your not going to resell and you have bigger stuff to deal with smash them and pack them or if you have one put two at a time on drill press. I am getting $1.10#. I would rather spend time taking apart servers than toying with the tiny screws on harddrives. If you are doing all the work then take the easy money and get after the bigger stuff.
