    I buy and re-sell mainly escrap these days..........Even with shipping costs I can still offer top dollar for escrap and come out ahead......The 3000 was just an example..........I have enough put back (Mainly from scrappin) to live off of for several years...........I buy low and sell high and now I mainly dismantle escrap.......I used to haul cars just to much competition
    Not sure what I will do as the competition increases on the e-scrappers.........If my truck breaks down I fix it and just work a little harder that week.........Anyway scrap metal itself will only get you so far......Copper, E-scrap, etc is where the money is.......Would I rather haul a truckload for $100 or send in one 65 lb box to ewasted and get $200?????

    I would love to answer your question for you. I know my costs for the month are going to be around 13,000 to 17,000. I should cover that in a week and a half or a two weeks. Anything after that is pure profit. Hope that helps.

    i agree I pretty much figure mine by the month......I know if I am in the profit and still have several hundred computers I am doing fairly well.........Some months I might spend 10,000 some 1000..........I don't keep a log book I just make sound biz decisions and hope the market goes up or stays around the same

    I lost my income and had only 30.00 to my name. I decided that I would give scrapping a try since I had a few things laying around here, talked to the few people I know and told them what I was going to do. Gathered a load and took it in, money in hand I started curb shopping, took a load in, more money in hand, continued routine. I'm covering bills and basic needs now. I do have those days where I don't bring in much so I do work to just break even. Then I have several good days, make a profit and keep going.

    I look at it like this, as long as my bills are paid and my kids have food on the table, then I'm ahead. I also support myself and don't depend on everyone's tax dollars to support me so I've got something to be proud of. Absolutely loving what I do makes it all worth it.

    If I can make a full time business out of this someday then I'll start worrying about trying to calculate costs. But for now as long as I keep bring in money and always have at least that original 30.00 stuck away then I figure I"m ahead.


    *****BTW I almost forgot, about 90% of my first check wen't on Christmas for the boys.

    I get such poor mileage and ferrous pays so badly here ($150-160 ton) that I am trying to network and get people to call me - it' s taken a long time but that is starting to happen in small ways anyway. I finally tracked down a part-time repair guy I've been hunting for months- he sold me one tower right away and told me sad tales of all the ones he'd taken out to the street - he was pretty happy to find someone to pay him even three bucks. My business is too small scale and unpredictable to plan costs for -my only goal is to keep them as low as possible.

    I agree I think I started with a couple hundred and as long as I have my initial investment and moving forward I consider it a sucess

    Started out with a pickup I bought off my dad and a dodge half ton pick up box trailer I built. Now have two pick ups, open top gooseneck stock trailer, car trailer, and two pickup box trailers. So yeah, I'd say it's coming along.

    That's good money for a little truck. Good for you.

    I think I've misunderstood what you've said. It costs you almost $1.50 per mile to drive your truck? If that is the case that is a lot for a little truck.

    I am one of those guys that lives day to day or hand to mouth. Well I was until I found employment. Now that I am working 50 - 70 hours per week, we have a budget, We (I) know how much I make, How much the monthly bills are, Electricity, Cell Phones, Internet, Food, Vehicle Insurance, Fuel, Maintenance, Percentage set back for break downs or sickness. Since my job pays well enough to cover our bills, with a little bit left over. All of our scrapping is profit. I say this because we rarely venture out only to curb shop. Any curb shopping we do is in route to where ever I am going at the moment. The rest of our scrap comes from my employer, my wife's employer and arranged pick-ups.

    When all we could do was curb shop, we dealt in anything we could, that would earn some cash for Fuel, Food, cigs and the occasional beer. We kept our eyes open for E-Waste, Regular Scrap, Nylon Carpet, Carpet Padding, Pallets, Clothing\Cloth, Large amounts of paper, Books\Text books, Soda\Beer Cans, Tin Cans (food type), Cardboard, Yarn\Thread, Vehicles, Car, Truck, Tractor, Forklift Batteries .... I mean the list goes on and on.

    But to answer your question in the most basic form. At first, no ,,, I did not know what my numbers were or how much I needed to break even or how much to make a profit. All we knew back then was ... we needed Food, Fuel and Cigarettes. Now that we are both employed, Yes, We know our numbers and how each day\load(s) affect our bottom line. Sorry for rambling on folks.

    We are all different, most of you know I have a full time job so scrapping is expendable income, I do know at the end of every week my stockpile has grown, all my meals were free, my diesel tank is full and me and my partner have a few extra $100s in our pocket. Depending on the week determines on all of the above variables. Some weeks we may get 10 to 12 cars, others we may only get 1 or 2. It's hard to nail down an exact number but like tater said if it ever goes in the red we will have to make some changes. If I ever go full time I will have to deep dive and crunch some numbers to make sure I know what I'm doing. Me myself on the repairs issue if its major we have two extra trucks and we can take care of stuff like flats ourselves so its not an issue for us, but I do see what you are saying because I have seen a time when a flat tire would have caused me to miss a few meals, that being said no matter how small or large your operation is you need to have plans, goals, and even dreams to make the most out of this business you can, it's all in what we make it

    My situation is a little different, I have a full time job making good money. But if I would have lost it a year ago when we started it woulda stopped us, but now a year later tho they are not dovetails I have 5 more 16 footers I could use and spare winches, plus we have the tow truck, if I had to put my truck in the shop I have an extra 94 cummins dodge. We been stockpiling cars we have 16 now only scrapping enough of them to buy the next cars and also have stacks of extinguishers to break down. Now as far as the living today is what's hard to predict, scrapped 3 cars and all the converters were empty, they coulda been a free car

    I never go to the scrapyard unless I make over 200.00 I know this when I calculate what I have. Recently the lowest I have made is 214.00 one trip and the most 650.00. Total past two months 2000 on top of regular job...not bad at all...

    I use trial and error. I scrap, resell and haul as my only income. I've found I can't curb shop in my truck I have to use my HHR. I only use the truck for calls and pallets. I also know im gonna have to start paying for scrap very soon to keep the down time to a minimum.
