    Doing it BIG!

So i finally decided im gonna take this part time scrapping to the next level over the next 2 weeks me and my partner are gonna dump about 10 grand into the business buying everything from a wire granulator to some new sawzells and a heated shed to work in the winter. i just bought a truck (ford f350 super duty) so all thats left is to start advertising everywhere. any tips from the big timers here ? how was it to transfer from a part timer to a full timer ?

I would use some of that money to buy scrap when it seems all your free leads are dried up.

You will make more money but you will also spend a lot more. Especially if you go from getting free scrap to having to compete with others who pay for their scrap. Their are lots of boys out their advertising big prices which will increase your costs of doing business. It's not all free bubble up and rainbow stew. It takes a lot of work. If you have the drive and decent head on you, you'll do fine.

I have always said. Let your business decide when it is time to expand. What I mean is, when you have so much material coming in and scrapping runs to the yard, that you are using all of your "working" time and part or most of your "personal" time, then it is now time to expand. If you try to expand to early, you could be stuck with a lot of equipment\tools\vehicles that are just sitting around not being used as much as you had hoped. I am sure you know your business way better than I do. I only posted so that you would be careful about expanding at the right time. I wish you nothing but the very best of wishes in your venture to go scrapping full time.

The Best of Luck to You.

    Be Safe out there.

Congrats Ron. Sounds like things are moving along well for you. Just keep it on your side of 110...lol...just kidding. Let me know when you get that heated shed set up i would like to check it out.

I'd be interested in seeing your granulator. I just bought a large stripper which paid for itself after its first use. I had a hard time believing that it would strip up to 750 mcm as advertised but I ran a few hundred pounds of 600 and 500 mcm through it and it never slowed it down a bit.

Hope it works out for you. The biggest problem that i have run into stalling my full time dreams is when, as pointed out, things dry up from all your regulars. Just this summer i went from 6 ac units a day to nothing pretty much over night. on a personal note, be careful with partners while growing a small company. Best of luck.

    Expansion

Be careful when expanding too fast if you do and have about 5k left over you can go to govliquidation.com and bid on tons of scrap thats how i expanded my business fast and now im sitting good with 20 full time employees and bought 500k of equipment and 90k of trucks and trailers and going to expand into roll off service for companies and some private use
