    Brand New Plan / Full Time Scrap Business

    I am slowing down for the year in the construction and have lost my passion for dealing with the insanity of the business. It is time for some new insanity. My plan is to shift gears and go into Hauling, e-waste, and metals full time.

    It is Black Friday and I started last night making plans and posting a few ads. Already had a few calls.

    The Purpose of this thread

    1. Post my goals, this creates accountability for me to achieve results.
    2. Help scrappers become more successful by sharing information.
    3. Track my results and get input from the seasoned veterans.

    Goals

    * Make $1,000,000 in the next 5 years
    * Open Retail Buying Location by March 1st, 2013
    * Create Donation Bins Program for in-store drop offs
    * Become R2 Certified
    * Create Fundraising Donation Program.

    I am working out the Marketing Plan now. I wil post my methods of advertising and marketing as well as the results. I am going to keep things real simple as it it impossible to get complicated with my budget. Essentially I will be starting with very limited funds. What I am going to do is take what I have to the yard on Monday and that will be my entire budget. LOL. I know the power of a motivated individual and what I can achieve. Working from my basement coal cellar workshop and kitchen table I start upon the path of creating something. Time wil only tell what happens once the excitement wears off and the exhaustion comes on strong.

    Look back for updates.

    Lofty goal yes, unreachable no. I have a well developed plan that I have been modifying and revising for a year now. Once I put the next revision on it and get it proof read and printed I will post it on here for all to see and critic. Diversification is the key, scrap metal, e-waste, and hauling should put me right where I want to be.

    I am looking into acquiring some capital from investors. Once I get that in place I should be in a position to create some explosive growth.

    My GC license is growing mold right now as well and I did what you are proposing. The biggest thing I can recommend is to find which niche you fit into best and concentrate on that. I've tried to "do it all" and just cant keep up. If I'm hauling all day, I cant do marketing or tearing down of equipment. If i'm locked up in my garage then my truck sits idle while someone else gets the goods. At some point you have to step back and see what you want to be doing. Obviously your plan includes hiring labor or getting a partner (or investor). The sooner you figure out what role you want to concentrate on the better. Personally I like driving around in my truck and knocking on doors/handing out cards to businesses. But to make the million $ mark you have to have help (and pay for it somehow!).

    The old but true saying comes into play here - "It takes money to make money".
    People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

    I have gone the partner route several times. Never, ever, ever, neverever, again. I do a lot with real estate investments and have access to some funding. I just need to put something together and ensure their ROI will be right. This is going to take some doing on my part but I have several very solid ideas.

    You will need some kind of financial help. Those goals are very steep. Good luck though.

    Good luck to ya, I guess if your gona aim high that's shows a sign of ambition but I would say in this industry that's pretty lofty might reconsider that goal if you don't know how your gona achieve it. If you think construction is cut throat scrapping isn't gona be no walk in the park either. Anyhow best of luck to ya

    Setting goals and acomplishing them is great way to do things. I set a goal of how much $$$ to make a year scrapping. Every year I raise my goal. 1 million in 5 years is a long shot, but 5 years is also a long time and ya dont know what can happen. Good luck.

    I see myself buying property, building a steel building, install a drive on scale, leveraging the scrap and hauling and buying roll off containers, going the retail route and building bins to place in stores. The sweetest part of the whole process will be looking back at when I had one truck with 300,000 plus miles and smiling.

    Ed Jackson, Amix Salvage started out with a pick up truck and a wheelbarrow in Penticton BC on IR land, today all his yards are still located on IR land. Amix Recycling is the largest scrap metal recycler in British Columbia with over 60 years of sales experience in industrial equipment and steel products.

    Slater Salvage started out without a truck working from a small piece of ground located behind a Foundry in Surrey BC. Scrap Metal Recycling and Electronic Scrap Recycling at Slater Iron and Salvage

    Rip Roche started out with a home build car crusher, no website

    Davis Trading started out with a hand cart rag and bone now into 4th generation family run business. Davis Trading & Supply Ltd. - Recycle Vancouver

    Captain Crunch two brothers started out from the home farm plot in Abbotsford BC. Home | Capt'n Crunch Auto Wrecking

    For a laugh Be sure to read the Capetian Crunch History, http://www.captncrunch.ca/history

    I personally think your goals a bit optimistic, it is going to take more than 5 years to realize your ambition. Especially the part of having 1 million liquid dollars at your disposal, you may however have a million in assets.

    A good friend of mine once told me it was best to work with the banks money, a good line of credit never hurt anyone.
