My latest trick - scrapping cars without touching them!

So I am getting more and more cars from my CL ads. Fortunately I have learned to ask good questions. A woman called and had to have her 91 Olds van gone TODAY. I tell her I can give her about $200.00 for it and she's fine with that.

Now I've been using a tow dolly, so I ask if the tires are inflated. Nope, they are all flat as it has been sitting a very long time. Now I can't tow it myself, but my scrap yard will go get it for me for a price, and it's kind of far. And what I lose out on is the ability to strip the car.

I continue asking questions, and find out the cat is gone. At this point I tell her I can only give her $100 for the car and she is fine with it.

So as it worked out, the car scrapped out for $342.00, I paid $100 to her and $100 for the tow, I made $142 and never left my driveway.

Sometimes I really like being a scrapper!

Man o' Man.. Is car scrapping not so competitive in your neck of the woods? Here my ads get drowned out in about 30 minutes from people with "Scrap Your Car for Cash" ads! Maybe my wording is off? I have had an ad running for 2 months- not 1 single call!

Burly, keep your eyes open for someone with a roll back wrecker. A friend of mine has an old one and he runs a part time garage in a small town. No name on it or anything but he only charges $50.00 for any kind of pickup or delivery.

I had him go pick up an old Sable and deliver it to the scrapyard for me and it was only $50. Doesn't matter if it's 2 mile or 25. You might get lucky and find someone needing a little work.

mechanic is right, i got a few i use now when we get backed up, its better to spend a little extra than to lose a car, i always try to buy them lunch or breakfast on occasion, with a good relationship ive been charged anywhere from free to $45, and they deliver to my house, the repo guys charge $25 for delivery, its a win win for everyone involved

    That was a good deal.

I've never scrapped any cars that weren't my own. Can you do it if they don't have a title? Just wondering.

Check with your state, some do, some don't after so old. Your local yard can also tell you how they want them.
At my yard I didn't have to touch it. They prep them there.

By road worthy AAA is basically saying a vehicle that is tagged and recently operated, not a van parked in a yard with flat tires. but if the driver is cool and willing to do it anyway great. i wasted over an hour with AAA, just wanted to tell my experience to save someone else a headache.

What should it matter ? Tow trucks were invented to move disabled cars, what's it matter if it broke down today or 10 years ago ? Im not doubting you metalearth, I just think that's a dumb policy is all.

Just heard on the news that if your vehicle breaks down on one of the interstate highways they suggest that you stay with your vehicle until you can have it towed as the tweakers/?? are coming by and stealing the tires/rims off of them right where they sit. Some are missing $600. -$1000 worth of tires-rims.
