the best way to get better pricing, is to bring in stuff prepared to the highest grade they take, sort it out into different containers to minimize thier amount of time and effort inputted into processing your material. call first and deal with one buyer, (most have more than one) tell them what you have and ask when is the best time for them for you to come in. gatorade and bottled water as soon as it starts to get warm. (it's really hard for yard guys to eat a donut with dirty hands.) and ask what you can do to prepare stuff better for next time.

Love this thread. I have to say though some yards are also on tiered pricing meaning. Bring in less then 5 tons of material you get paid the same price as someone who brought in 200 lbs. 5 to 10 tons a slightly better price. 10 tons and over you get the industrial price. The same as all there industrial, demo, contractors/construction prices. Yards look at you with both eyes instead of one if you are bringing in weight and aren't playing games. There is a reason why you are either a peddler or a industrial customer. It always helps if you have a large amount of ferrous or non-ferrous to place a call to the front desk and ask for a buyer and explain in great detail what you have and what you can deliver. Once you have an established relationship with the yard and the buyer then you can get top notch prices and not be treated like you just walked in off the street. I also have to add knowledge is power in this industry you can NEVER NEVER stop learning always ask the salesmen questions. Every yard grades and prepares there material differently then the one down the street. Find out how to maximize your scrap value by asking questions even if its a dumb question they will still answer it. Its your money and you are gambling with it in the scrap industry. You better throw your best hand out every day or pack it in and go home. Maximize your money and the possibilities are endless!!!!

    WOW!!!!
Your shred price is almost double mine but Prepared is the same. I think it might be time to start pestering my yard as you say. unfortunately there are only two yards near me both being 50+ miles and their prices are pretty much the same.
