- TN Scrap Metal Laws and Scrap Dealer Registration Program

I am wondering how current members from Tennessee deal with these laws. The biggest hurdle that seems to keep throwing itself in my way seems to be the scrap metal registration program. I don't have too big of a problem paying the $175 dollars for two years, but the intrusiveness of the laws related to the program are a little to much to handle. Does anyone have any experience in dealing with these laws, mostly from an E-waste standpoint?

The program is a joke........Really the only thing you can't sell without the liscense is the a/c coils.........Everyone just sells em to a street level dealer and they make their cut........Wait 5 days on copper.......WOW big deal for a full time scrapper just gives me incentive to get more together and go back in 5 days........As far as E-waste Tennessee has hardly no laws governing this so go for it!!!

I have been concerned with the buying aspect of it. I have a supplier waiting for me to open my business, and he does the storage unit auctions. I was going to buy/receive at no cost the electronics he can't or doesn't want to sell. I have been worried about that law and actually being a business because they could find you and charge you with a class A misdemeanor for not having that license.

I really wouldn't worry about it.........Tennessee is very lax when it comes to buying selling etc..Look at all the flea markets, yard sales, craigslist, etc.......Some people make 1000's a year buying and selling on craigslist.....If your that worried about it go sign up for the program and give em your money........I pay my taxes in Tennessee..........Every time I buy anything its almost 10% sales tax.......And I'm fine with that.........My taxes get paid and I never miss the money because I am just used to the sales taxOriginally Posted by Spidy

sooooooo like what. you are going to make so much, that you really think they are going to FIND you, and SPANK you ... with a misdemeanor?? if you make big money, hire an accountant. If not, jump in and go for it. If you are called to be an "entrepreneur" YA JUST DO IT! Then work out the details as you grow!
I seriously doubt they have the time, to chase after someone trying to do a "start up", keep gas in the truck, etc... and just get by. If you have that many worries...maybe a nine to 5 is the way to go! Starting anything is a risk! Jump in...or... jump off! My 2. BroJer

Thank you both for your responses. I'm not letting this law hold me back from starting my business. I'm just a very careful planner when I do things, and I like to understand fully the risks and opportunities that I might encounter. After I understand the risks, I go full force. I have found my way around dealing with this law with just a very slight modification to my overall business plan that changes basically nothing.
