Grrrr... It finally happened, Got my first load of boards from a tweeker

So i had a new customer over the weekend drop off 189 pounds of telcom boards. I normally like to chat up my customers and he was very defensive when i asked any questions about the boards. He was sweaty during the entire transaction and i had to repeat myself 2-4 times each time to get him to answer any questions. Also he had some of the worst shakes i've ever seen and he said it's because of disease he got as a kid. He also asked me some weird questions like, when im normally home, and if i normally keep this stuff outside.



So i cut him a check for the stuff even though he insisted on cash. I told him he could cash it on Monday and purposely post dated it for Wednesday. Well called the police after he left and of course when they arrived they were all stolen boards. I left a description of his car and the guy with the officer, now im out $6 to cancel the check.

I used to own a restaurant/bar/nightclub. One of the pieces of equipment I have kept is a device that scans peoples California ID Cards. I realize that each state is different, but their are devices like this made for most states. They are not very expensive and just hook up to a computer. Some can even hook into your state DMV, but this one just records the important information. All you do is scan their ID, the equipment will tell you if it's fake or not, match the ID with the person. This discourages 99% of the thieves. I also have them sign a document, a one time event I am required to keep on file for the Department of Homeland Security.

Another thing I do is keep the location I store and process material totally separate from where I purchase material. Because of the nature of my business, I prefer to keep my refining location private to prevent break ins and theft. I explain this to people when I tell them I don't give out my processing address, and have never had any issue yet on this point.

Maybe put the info on that "stolen website" that is used by law enforcement and the scrap yards.

Careful if you see this guy again... From his point of view, you're the guy that stole his boards and gave him a bad check for them.

The majority of my things are locked up tight, whats not is some tin that i leave out cause i dont have the space. But i have night vision camera's, motion activated lights, a dog that barks at the grass when the wind blows it and a more than enough Guns and Ammo to have what i need in the bedroom, office and at the back door.

This is one place he wont want to return too.

Your honesty is very refreshing. Well done.

On the bright side, if you end up in court maybe you could find out who he stole them from and work out some deal with them in the future for other boards.
