Movin up in the world! ....I hope.

Me and my scrappin buddy have decided to make flyers and business cards, calling ourselves "Scrapburs Ltd"

Been good friends with the guy for ages, almost like brothers, that's how we got the name. (didn't like calling each other BRO so we say BUR. Started when we where young and it just stuck)

Looking to specialize in farm or barn cleanups and after hours pickup. Hoping people will like the fact that we are available after work and on weekends. And there's primarily farms in my area, lots of them.

Will post the flyer when it's done.
If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

Unless you have a well developed business plan with defined duties, be prepared to lose a buddy.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

You can make partners work as long as everything is set right up front from the time it starts.

Yeah we are working it all out before hand. Hoping it'll work. Got a way to calculate expenses like fuel and such, all that will be covered BEFORE we each take our cut. We are confident, but If we find there are too many issues we are gonna stop the work partnership. Would rather save our friendship.

I think it would be better to get something together take out fuel like you said and split the rest. Also have to split all of the vehicle maintenance

Yeah I think we are gonna look at our mpg empty and with weight and come up with however much per km and cover fuel/maintenance that way.

While the name is nice once the story is told, Other people who see the name without hearing the story may be confused and keep looking.

Just something to think about. On the other hand, if you get well known in the community, then an oddball name can be memorable.

Take %20 out for the vehicle.ya gotta do that or it will fail fast. The wear and tear is significant, if you can't do all the wrenching yourself then figure on a bit more. Its non stop brakes, clutches, tires, engines. Throw away beater $500 cars can actually be more cost effective as scrap mobiles, tear out all the seats and get a roof rack. lost some good friends over unrealistic expectations on how the "easy money was going to be divided". That being said best of luck..it can be an awesome time

Jord- I HAVE to agree with Mick. I lost friends that I did work at their houses doing contracting work and I've lost buddies to the scrap game too. As Mick Said- DEFINE the roles, the split etc.- ALL of it up front!

its not exact jord but a good estimate is for a truck you get a estimate loss of 1 mile per gallon for every 300 lbs on the highway. and 2 mpg in the city.

Its not as easy to just drive a junker up here. All vehicles need to pass a very strict and very in depth safety inspection and an environmental test.

Ex: if the brake lines are rusty at any point, they all fail and need to be replaced. The engine light must be out for the e test computer to even just run a test. Front end parts must have ZERO or very close to zero play. Suuper strict. A 500 junker is now a $2500 investment by the time everything is said and done and its on the road.

Appreciate all the input guys. Im not expecting fast cash here. I know its gonna take time and lot of hard work. But Im committed to this. While other interests have come and gone since learning about scrap 2 years ago, scrapping has been one of those things that i think about at minimum once a day.

How can i stand out from the rest. What's an innovation that will save me time and money. How can i be more efficient. just to name a few. Many of my ideas have failed while others are working great.

Making mistakes is a great way to learn. We will see if this venture will succeed or fail. Either way, life goes on and i'll learn valuable information from it.

Have you looked into whether there are any city or county regulations regarding running a business under an assumed name? It's required in some places. That's why I run my business under my own name. The added benefit is that, depending on how things go at the end of the year, I can decide whether to file taxes as a business or as a hobby.

Also, I would look a little more into the use of the title "Ltd." Unless you incorporate the business, you may not be legally allowed to use that. I could be wrong, I'm not a lawyer. But it bears looking into it to avoid troubles down the line.

Not sure how it works in Canada. You can bet you may not use Ltd or a fictional name unless you have filed it as such. If you dont believe me; go try to open a bank account or get credit without the paperwork showing your Fein # or whatever they call it in Canada. I'm still surprised.people throw fictional names around. There is paperwork, rules, and fees to running outside of a sole proprietarship. Don't even think about putting signage on your truck till you have commercial vehicle and liability insurance.
