    Educating the scrap yard...

I started going through my low grade board boxes yesterday, pulling transformers, heat sinks, etc. I decided I should call my yard and see if they buy boards and what was acceptable, preferred left on or removed.
The girl spoke with was clueless on the board question. But had the boss call me back this morning. He said they won't accept brown boards at all. They would accept green boards "from computers", not from tv's 'n such @ .10 per pound.
So I asked about ic chips, transformers 'n the copper coils off of low grade boards. He said he really wasn't familiar with what I was talking about, and requested a sample of what I'm wanting to sell. Said they are just trying to break into the electronic recycleing and he isn't well informed.
I instantly saw this as an opportunity to maybe help in his education and possibly put myself in a favorable light for future dealings.
I guess I'm looking for suggestions/ ideas on the best way to approach it to most take advantage of the opportunity.
You guys have always brought out new and better ideas than I came up with on everything I've ever asked.. Thanks fer that

You don't want to teach him so much that it takes away a business opportunity for you to possibly buy some things from him. How about giving him a price sheet and some examples or pictures of what you would like to buy from him and let him set a price that he buys from others.

Must be a old school yard,I don't know if they buy cpu's if they do I am sure they are only paying shread prices for them, the best way to get his intrest in my opinion would be to offer him a nice juicy price for them, remember they have no e-scrap so make sure to tell him that the monitors are not included, the number I would throw out at him would be double the shred price,I would pick them up once a week or something like a on call basis,do not educate him lose lips sink ships, your knowledge is your's tell him as least as possible, good luck,

I tried to educate a yard owner once about pulling silver contacts from BIG electrical contactors he got in on a regular basis.....like 1" square contacts x 1/8" thick. They woulda added up fast for him.

Yes, he was pretty thick. Told me he wanted the copper, could care less about the silver, and wouldn't sell me anything. Donut.

"old school"... been here for decades. I've dealt with them for several years selling ferrous and non-ferrous metals. They've always been pretty fair to deal with and treated me well. I was leaving the yard pretty PO'd once because I didn't recieve the price I was quoted over the phone.(I've since learned to get a name) I had almost cleared the gate when the girl from the office came rushing out waving her hands full of papers. "Jack wants to talk to you"..
He righted the wrong, and said he didn't want good customers going away mad. That in itself has kept me returning to their yard.
.10 p/lb IS their shred price right now.

I find sometimes educating your yard to a degree is a good thing. They take care of me, I take care of them. I may turn them on to buying some new things in regards to ewaste, but thats cause I got selfish aims an want them to sell to me what they get from general joe q public. Seems to work out for me. Sure they could come online, do the research, learn all that we all know, find the buyers etc..but like grouchy..I deal with an old school yard, if it involves them looking on a computer beyond prices for selling their metal..they want no part of it..LOL. They don't have enough time in the day for what they do now, let alone wasting time learning about something like ewaste. Not all yards are the same, sometimes you have to treat things like this on a case by case basis.

At his .10 per pound price for computers boards I can't see how you could go wrong in making an offer to buy from him.

    I certainly would!

He could make 5X his money and we could be friends...LOL
There may a million better places to live than Iowa, but none of them are home!
