When I sell my scrap to my yard, do they turn around and resell at a higher price to manufacturers and processors overseas? I know they do not do any of the processing their selves. Where do they find their customers?

That depends a lot on where in the country you are.
My particular yard shreds their steel scrap and trucks it up to a steel foundry to be cycled back into new steel.
Some may be loaded onto containers and shipped overseas.

There was a train derailed or something not long ago, in Florida I believe it was. The story focused on the wreck itself, but I picked up one tidbit from the story that said (to me) tons more than their story was attempting to tell. They don't want to deal with small guys like me and you. They need a consistent supply of material. How much depends on what they manufacture. Try telling a GM plant super that you could supply 5 or 6 ton every other month - maybe.

when you become the yard that people are waiting in line to sell to, then you'll find connections higher up the food chain, and they'll find you.
As long as you're the one waiting in line and selling to a yard, regret there is no answer for your question.

of the two main yards that I use, one sells their steel local, one sends it overseas. I tend to use the one that stays local more. Just ask them, they should tell you no problem.

I have 8 ferrous and non-ferrous yards within 16 miles of me. The seven smaller yards all ship their material to a much larger yard that is only 3 miles from me. Can you guess who I sell my already processed material to.
The good thing in my situation is, the big yard still takes smaller loads from walk-in customers and we are called peddlers. Look for the largest yard in your area\county\state that has an auto shredder and will still take walk-ins.

The yard I use is a local one that was bought out by SIMS. SIMS is a very very very large company that uses contracts and in house equipment.
You can try to get a contract with your yard for hiogher pricing if you are high volume, or find a bigger yard.
Generally, to sell to a manufacturer, you need multiple tractor trailer loads a week just to talk to someone that can make a decision.
